[raises hand eagerly]  But sir, I've never heard of Gel-Sol before ... it sounds like an ointment you might use for cuts and other bodily ailments. Can't you do another test, maybe Hammock vs Captain Beefheart ?   :P

I too failed the recognition test, having no idea about Gel-Sol, but this Fun New Game did serve to demonstrate the extreme similarity between tracks by different artists.  Fun stuff, keep it going.  Your new blog is most excellent!

Not wanting to be accused of obscurantism (or of secretly listening to 'ointment'), this one's for Anthony:

And thanks for the comments, Mike. Resemblance (Gel-Sol vs Hammock) is almost uncanny, innit?
I do plan to put up further instalments in the various 'strands' on this blog, incl. more in this Fun New Ambient Electronic Game.

Hey Alan,

Close - but no cigar.
I think they are similiar - but not that similiar, will report back later when the files have been sent
to the 'sonic laboratory' :)

I take it this is the sequence:
A(1) Gel-Sol
B(1) Hammock
A(2) Gel-Sol
B(2) Hammock

cheers
Pete

Ah, now that sounded like one continuous track from Beefheart's new ambient album.
I particularly liked the guitar solos.

But yes, the Gel-Sol and Hammock bits are as good as indistinguishable.

Yep, I'd say Pete had it right.

Gel-Sol
Hammock
Gel-Sol
Hammock
Gel-Sol
Hammock
Gel-Sol
Hammock etc

The progression is similar, but you can't miss Hammock's beautiful dreamy strat.  The dude from Gel-Sol is using some sort of Ring Modulator on a synth instead.
But well spotted similarity.  And it's a cool idea! You could have stuck some Britney in there for some extra challenge.  hmmm, Ring Modulator, Strat, Groaning Ho, Ring Modulator etc

Humorously - I know Gel-Sol - but never heard of Hammock.
