Great moments in ambient fandom.
« on: October 28, 2008, 10:41:04 AM »
In the car with mom last night, driving her home. I begin to back out of the driveway.

Mom: Oh my, you need brakes!

Me: What?

Mom: Your brakes sound---oh...that's your music.

It was the beginning of M. Peck's "Glacial."

My wife was so proud when I had my first CD released that when her mum, 4of her sisters, both her daughters and both her grandaughters visited she told them and put it on.

:-[ moment - one of them after about 30 seconds asked Is this music?

:) moment - about a minute later every single one of them was spaced out....

That's hilarious. Thanks for sharing that.
Mark and I had a similar experience on our way to the Gathering... We pulled out of a gas station and I had my mp3 player in my hand, scrolled to a Mahoney/Peck track that starts out with some austere, grinding sounds (go figure) and Mark starts to slow down...
Mark: Oh man, do you hear that?

Me: Yeah man

Mark: Awe shit man, you gotta be f-ing kidding me...

Me: That doesn't sound good man (as I turn it up as he slows down).

Mark: (in a panic) JFC! I'm pulling over man.

I was laughing my ass off and told him it was music. Good times.

Funny stuff!   ;D

Back in the late 80's, I was working on a fishing boat 30 miles off Oregon.  We killed the engines, ate, and hit the rack.  My captain snored, so I always slept with a Walkman on; I'd be asleep in 15 minutes, and the tape would stop in 20 or 30.  I was enjoying a Severed Heads tape, on pretty low volume, when my captain said, "Hey, do you hear that?  Wow, I think it's whales!"
I shut off the tape, and listened, but didn't hear anything.
"Now it's gone," he said, so I went back into my cocoon.
"There it is again!" he shouted.
Took me a few seconds to figure out what he was really hearing...   :D
I wish I was a Glowworm; a Glowworm's never glum. 'Cause how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?

"There's something wrong with the CD. It goes (low voice) bruuum bruuum."

"That's how it's supposed to go."

"Oh."

the only time my wife uses the word "shit" is when i put one of my cd's on for someone else to hear. she'll say, "jim, nobody else wants to hear that shit!" even when they say they do want to hear it.

Kathryn has "code speak" about the music I play. If she asks "Who is this?" it means she is digging it. If she ignores it, she probably thinks it sucks. FTR, she doesn't mind most ambient music. It's solo piano new age music that drives her nuts. She just loathes it. She finds the quirky ambient, e.g. glitch, collage, etc., interesting.

Bummer you don't like piano music - but hey - each to their own!

I just have the typical stories of people walking up to my desk and talking to me for awhile - and then wondering if there's a problem with the heating ductwork or with my computer...

Or having someone introduce me to someone else and say I'm a musician - and I told them I mostly write electronic music - and he replies with "oh, you're a dj then" in a sarcastic manner...  Easier to say yeah then explain the 30+ years of playing piano...  :-)

Yo, I don't hate it...she does...and she loves "real" piano music (her emphasis, not mine). She just hates new age piano music. And, as a reviewer, I must say the sheer number of solo piano albums I get and most are not saying anything new or different than the others does make reviewing them tough. Still, some of favorite new age CDs are piano releases. So, don't think I hate the stuff. I just refrain from playing it when she's around.

A: The F5 key broke.
