Now Watching

Thought I'd start a thread for films and related things people are enjoying
and might want to mention. Think of it like the Now Playing or Now Reading threads.

Gattaca - hadn't seen this since its release. Fine piece of work. Jude Law is excellent in it.

Watched Get Smart the other night great!  Dwayne Johnson has great comic timing and Alan Arkin is the funniest man alive.  Saw Marley and Me Christmas day.  @#$%&, of course.  (If I say the word, I'll give away the ending.)  A MUST for every dog lover.  Watched Last Man Standing last night.  Good shoot 'em up flick.  I got a DVD of The Doors Soundsatge performances for Xmas.  Live in TV studios.  Really good quality, subdued, no audience, The Doors at their best.  Also finally got(finally released on DVD) Quo Vadis, but the DVD was %@#$ed up.  Returned and ordered a new copy.  Haven't seen that one for years.  Oh yeah... Charlie and the Chocolate factory... :o

Blu-Ray: The Dark Knight - great film but went on for too long - Heath Ledger is a great Joker

Blu-Ray: Iron Man - another good super hero movie

DVD: Stop Loss - a compelling story about the backdoor draft of the Iraq war

DVD: The Brothers Grimm - Terry Gilliam movie with great visuals and pretty good story - lots of fairytale references starring Matt Damon and Heath Ledger

I finally got a Blu-Ray player when I found one for $150 on Woot.com.

Went to see Quantum of Solace on Saturday. Good but nowhere near as good as Casino Royale. Not enough drama, actually too much action, and I hope they stop trying to shoot action scenes/fights/chases in the "Bourne" way with jump cuts every 1-2 second, literally. Daniel Craig and Judi Dench were great, of course, but the story wasn't all that compelling.

Watched a great "small" film on DVD two nights ago, titled Outsourced, about the misadventures of an American who is sent to India to bring a remote-based call center up to speed. Very warm, very funny, and not at all condescending to either the American or Indian way of life. In many ways, it reminded me of Local Hero, and the ending is, I think, meant to be a homage of sorts to that film. Here's the page at IMDB about it.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0425326/

The lead actress,Ayesha Dharker, is too beautiful and sexy for words:

HIGHLY recommended...heart-warming but not sappy at all.

Looking forward to seeing the new Clint Eastwood, Gran Turino, film when it opens here.

With all the bad weather here, and holidays/vacation, we've watched a ton of movies lately.  Standouts include:

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - Simply one of the most poignant and gripping films I've ever seen.  One of those rare films that has so much to say about what it means to be a human being, to suffer and to strive.  Wow, wow, wow.

Million Dollar Baby - We watched this the night after "Diving Bell" (above) without any idea that we were in for something so similar... I can't give away the ending in case others haven't seen it, and it IS definitely worth seeing.  Clint Eastwood is amazing, Morgan Freeman is great in an understated way, Hilary Swank is wonderful.  I just... didn't need to see this exact story the night after watching such a difficult film as the above.

The Other Boleyn Girl - Really wonderful, complex, well-staged and with great performances.  I think I'd recommend this to anyone, even those who don't like period pieces (and I know lots of people, men especially, feel that way), but I don't know.  If you hate stories that aren't founded upon modern day social conventions, you might not like a lot of the relationship dynamics, which really depend upon the time period.  In other words, there are women who do things to men, and men who do things to women, both in ways that would not happen in the present day... but I do feel it's believable and relatively historically appropriate.

Last night

- The Illusionist - which is 10 out of 10 in my book. Think this is my 3rd viewing. Excellent Philip Glass score.

having been off work with flu for four weeks I've watched a lot of TV and DVDs - can't remember what in the first couple of weeks but has included Matrix trilogy, House series 4, Babylon 5 series 1, the Dark Knight, Hellboy 2, The science of sleep, the colour of Magic, X-Files new film, Narnia - Prince Caspianplus lots of crap on TV....

The X-Files film I think they could have done as an episode and it would have been fine - but not a film, too long and not complicated enough....I thought the Darh Knight was great, it went into the story and values quite deeply. Prince Caspian film had no character development at all.

Ballykissangel!!!

I love that show!  The first few seasons are wonderful; they have that whimsical yet emotional quality that the first few seasons of "Northern Exposure" had...  Great stuff!

Rewatched

- Mission To Mars - I think it was from around 2000.
Very enjoyable. Slow movie, pretty much in the "2001" vein.

We are just starting to watch Stargate SG1 on DVD... having Battlestar Galactica withdrawals and trying to find some kind of poor man's sci-fi TV substitute.  Just watched the pilot last night, and it seems like it could be a cool idea.  So far at least, it looks more like escapist TV, along the lines of the various Star Trek shows, not as serious or ambitious as BSG.  I figure if it lasted 10 years, it can't be too bad, right?  Any fans of this show out there?

I've got all the seasons on dvd (both sg1 and atlantis).  There are great episodes and bad ones.  Once you get going you'll very likely love the show.  It's a little weak the 1st season with a few bright spots.  You've got to set up all the things to come - and they were feeling their way a bit early on.

Yeah - huge fan - I've seen most episodes 2 or 3 times.  :-)

I'm a fan of Stargate.  Its oddly addictive, mainly because of the great cast.
I also found episodes got better and better (generally) over the years.
So you have to be tolerant with the early ones.
