Thanks for posting your list. I'm glad I'm not the only one who sometimes has problems posting just ten releases in his "Best of the year" listing.

However, what's depressing about your list for me is how many of these I have not heard (because I never got a review copy or didn't purchase them) or even heard of. Oh well...I'll have my list ready soon. I'm waiting on one more ambient CD to arrive in the mail from a forum regular to see if it will crack into my best of the year list.

I always look forward to these lists from folks because invariably it points out how different our taste can be.

The year's best:

Oophoi- Arp Di Sabbia

Runner up:

The Circular Ruins- Falling Into The Sky

And in no particular order:

Chris Short- The Garden
Jonathan Block and The Circular Ruins- Shadows On Water
Darren Tate/Paul Bradley- Sometime Today
VidnaObmana- Act 4: The Bowing Harmony

And there's more, but I can't think of 'em right now because I REALLY need a nap. They'll come to me later.

Great mix, Dave! (except for one vocal track that I don't dig...but, with very few exceptions, I don't dig vocal music, period)

Might as well be the first...

2007 Faves:

Matt Borghi & Ben Fluery-Steiner | What Night Leaves Behind

hey - I appreciate the nod...Even if Alan L thought I borrowed too much sound from the "already-been-done tone bank"  ;) I was quite pleased with the results of this work...Matt deserves most the credit... WTNLB is in many ways a continuation of his dark, melodic work heard on Phantom Light of sorts only dipped in droney feedback and strange murky shadows I created by mixing the whole thing through various guitar pedals and Vst's..the last track "eyes of night" was my composition - a return to some new softsynths and guitar drone work...thanks again!  ben

Some nice ones on that list, Anthony, though that one's actually Vessel's debut album from 2002!

- Paul Bradley: Chroma
One of my favourites too, though must admit to being surprised to see it in your list, as I seem to recall you weren't totally convinced on first listen - something to do with its lack of lower-end frequencies and detail. Did it sneak up on you?

OK, that Vessel is a bit early :D strike it from the list.
I only got it a few months ago though, and its great.

Yep, Chroma got better the more I listened. Probably like Anamnesis more, but its not 2007.
I'm looking forward to picking up more Bradley this year. He is excellent ... as you well know.

Great to see the following GOS's releases recognized thus far:

Moljebka Pvlse - Driftsond  (GOS) CD-R
Jonathan Block & The Circular Ruins - Shadows on Water (GOS) CD-R
Matt Borghi & Ben Fleury-Steiner - What the Night Leaves Behind (GOS) CD-R

I'll post my more complete list later, but I actually do have a single favorite ambient record of 2007:

STEPHEN PHILIPS "Into the Dark" (HYPNOS) CD

Wow, was this one worth the LOOONNNNNGGGG wait.  Just a tremendous piece of minimal beauty and subtlety--rare that I listen to something as continuously as Steve's disc--press repeat and new discoveries emerge on each listen--not to mention a state of deep relaxation (which is always a bonus)...

I really never have a list - I tend to buy stuff that's been out for awhile so am not really all that current.   :)

I did pick up four great releases from Mike and Lena here at Hypnos that I completely enjoyed.   APK's first two releases on his Blue Oasis label are absolutely superb and highly recommended.   And I always enjoy new Vir Unis stuff - he released a couple of solo albums last year that are well worth downloading.    I enjoyed Numina's Symbiotic Spaces - I don't think it's at the top of my list as it's more of a collective peek at his growth as an artist over several years, but it's good and there are several true gems in the mix.  I really liked Parallel Worlds - Obsessive Surrealism.

Hey Ben, thanks for the comment on Stephen's disc.  I've been surprised that not too many people have been talking about this one, though I'm sure that talk will build up, because those who ARE talking about the album, love it.  Reminds me a bit of Modell/Mantra's Sonic Continuum in that at first nobody bought it and nobody talked about it, and now it's getting more talk, and selling more copies, years later.

Comments like yours, Ben, will help people realize that Stephen's album is special, and they should check it out.  Thanks again.

Hey, Ben. Can't let the GoS tribute go without mention of ENCOMIAST: Transit Bed, which provided a highly enjoyable uneasy listening experience, of which I appear to have scrawled in the coda to an ei-mag review: "...Defying reduction to generic type through these unselfconscious shape-shifting timbre tableaux, not for Encomiast the dull demystification of artists declaring themselves “isolationist ambient” or “dark drone”, but an eloquent grimy grandeur all of their own."
