How to create the Illusion...
« on: April 10, 2009, 03:48:35 PM »
How to create the illusion of always "falling" endlessly with sound ?
You feel weightless...
Some Ambience have this drifting/falling feel (in an metaphysical sense).

I wonder how to create this illusion with sound ?
I know Pitch/Reverb is important maybe "stretching" as well.....but I would like to know more in depth if possible.

Well if some one could demonstrate the technique...

With a simple piano hit or something...and massive reverb...

The effect I am talking about, should work on all sounds, and maybe even whole mixes...

One hit and note should be enough...to demonstrate the technique.
It must sound like the sound is always on the "edge" of time, like it is only moving "downwards" in space & time.
If you understand, I want the form of the sound to feel "elastic" like you are dragging the sound back and forth.
To manipulate early reflections and the tail length in an pattern...is probably a good start...

To use an stereo image balancing tool, to drag the sound towards the sides to the center might give the illusions of "falling".
Or that you get "sucked" into a black hole.

Wayne Higgins: I am listening to your song, and I am not sure this is what I am after.

Immersion,

I'm afraid this doesn't make any sense to me.

It's much simpler than this - experiment, experiment and then use your judgement to create
interesting material. There's no 'magic solution'/technique. You just have to come up with your own
approach.

cheers
Pete

My guess he is referring to what you might called depth of field.
Take care.

Immersion: maybe naming some tracks/albums that have this effect would help.

I think this effect can be created a number of ways, sometimes its the techniques, sometimes the sounds, sometimes the effects and sometimes the playing.

I get that sense of falling from various pieces of music by various artists.

I also think, Immersion, that playing and exploring with your synths/effects/studio to find out how you like creating it is the best way to go - you may discover something the rest of us have missed.....

Take the sound you want to manipulate/mutilate.

Step 1:  stretch out from original length to about 60 minutes - do not maintain original pitch - make sure it drops into ridiculously low territory

Step 2:  run through a thick reverb

Step 3:  delay might also be fun

Step 4: shrink the sample back down to about 10 minutes - maintain the pitch this time

Step 5:  process through an impulse file taken of a long stairway in a tunnel... Possibly of an old church or perhaps the London Underground

Step 6:  pitch shift up to something in human hearing range

Step 7:  if you like the gapper/snipper tool - nows a good time to use.

Step 7:  salt to taste

Step 9:  play your sample on stereo speakers at medium volume.

Step 10:  record using a pair of microphones setup in the basement (once again to get that sound "falling" type feel)

Step 11:  smack the guy that wrote this.

I can't edit my post from my blackberry - but obviously you're supposed to play the sample upstairs with the mics downstairs. ;-)
