Sunn - Monoliths and Dimensions
« on: May 27, 2009, 01:09:30 PM »
Getting excited about a second listen. First listen yielded much intrigue, and an urge to listen much more. I've been scornful in the past, but I think this album might be the one that breaks me through.

Feeling a little bit on the down side about this album after first headphoning, but I was in a sour mood and didn't have full wits about me. There is a lot here. My first reaction was quite excited though. Any thoughts out there? Have been going back into the Sunn catalogue, especially checking out White 2 and Altar. White 2 would most certainly appeal to the dark ambient fan. Very occultish, almost like an Aural Hypnox album. I think I am especially digging that one.

I've not even heard of Sunn.
Maybe links to some samples & info would be handy.
I'll try anything (once).     :)

You might have seen their name listed (as it is usually) as Sunn 0))) even though it's just pronounced like "sun."

Yeah, they took their full name from a cult company

and use it in their name/logo

There is debate over the accuracy of its transcription.

As a result of this typographic cleverness I've heard many people refer to them as "Sun Ohh"

Sunn OHHH!! would be awesome! Pronounce it as if you are almost orgasmically overwhelmed by the mighty power of the drone.

That is cool.

(And I don't usually use that word in polite society).

Hey, how did they get to steal the Sunn amp's name & logo, and Panasonic got in trouble for stealing that name?  Not fair!

And how did they manage to rip Led Zep IV's inner sleeve and Corbjin's "Atmosphere" Joy Division video in that single, comical shot of the two robed figures on the hill?  ;)

Their name is also a play on the name of the band "Earth"; Sunn O))) started out as an Earth tribute band.

I'm one of the uninformed who thought it was pronounced "Sun Oh".

Their samples sound mighty noisy to me... but they look like a cheery couple of dudes.

No shame in that, Joe... I mean, they put that O in there so it makes sense you might want to pronounce it.

Did you pronounce the * in the middle of :Zoviet*France: or possibly the colons at each end?

I changed my name by deedpoll many years ago and some of the options I considered were:

Janet ?
And Mrs Smith   (so as to become Mr and Mrs Smith)
Not Graham Reeves

The prototypical Sunn O))) track sounds to me like two guys dragging around some sludge-like riff-corpse dug up from the first Black Sabbath album played on 16 rpm as it decomposes (add daft CookieMonster-retching vocals to taste). I have to say, though, I was amused by their idea of ‘experimental recording techniques’, particularly the one which consisted of entombing the singer in a casket in the back of a Cadillac hearse to record his ‘vocal’. The whole dark robe mystique/pose is frankly ludicrous too. Do people not find it mystifying that their music can get tagged as ‘ambient’. Listening to a Sunn O))) track makes my ears feel so befouled after 5 minutes I run for the nearest New Age Meditational Shamanic Native American Spirit Crystal Healing recording to feel cleansed.
And I have to say my Mum would find it really hard to tap her foot to anything on Black One.

Both, actually. Most people don't realise this, but the sound of an asterisk is quite similar to the sound of one hand clapping. And as for the sound of a colon... ;)
