It hasn't been mentioned here since October, but please tell me some of you are enjoying "Modern Family." Simply the smartest, funniest show on TV right now. Capable of setting you off laughing hysterically and then delivering a magnificent heart-punch of pure emotion. Honest characters, solid writing and structure that makes the writerly me ab-so-lute-ly jealous.

The excellent tv version. Brilliant.
Tend to watch this again every few years.
Still fresh. But maybe its a British thing.

The Thing - prequel.....plot spoiler alert.

I have to say I was underwhelmed by this version - despite liking the way they linked the events and 'bodies' to the first film.

I thought having 2 non Norwegians in the station was very lazy writing - better to have had them all as Norwegian and filmed it all in english language - having the Americans (I would have felt the same if they were british) as the clever ones who worked it out etc just added to the sense of lazy script writing.

Although the effects were very good - I thought they lacked the originality of the first film and were very repetitive - and if bits of 'the thing' can survive on their own then it would have split into very small parts to sneak up on everyone at the same time, like insect bites.....

I also thought the 'repelling' of artificial bits was poorly thought out - if the alien is taking over every cell it would replace everything around the artificial items = not heal them.....

IMHO - but just my opinion....

Maybe I missed something, but I wasn't expecting much yet really liked the film.  If nothing else, see it for the special effects, they were fantastic.

Just finished the first season of the BBC show "The Fades."   An excellent, intense show about "fades" which are sort of ghosts, sort of zombies.  The main character is a reluctant high school kid that can see the dead people(fades).

At only six episodes, I swept through the whole season in one weekend.  Very cool.

Just started watching Millenium series 1 again - forgot how dark and unsettling this series is.

I got hooked on "Bones".   Had never seen a full episode before - now I'm sucked in.

Just started re-watching "The West Wing."  I haven't seen it since I watched it in real time years ago.

I am loving every minute of it!  Such a wonderful show.  I'm really looking forward to plowing through 6 or 7 years all over again.

Lena and I are just starting Dexter.... late to the party, I know. Fantastic show!

Also lately really into Downton Abbey, and Walking Dead (perhaps the two opposite extremes in terms of style & mood).

We have a lot of fun with Big Bang Theory and 30 Rock, and are also watching Burn Notice while we work out.

We watched "In Bruges" last night; good stuff.  Starts out as a mellow little sleeper of a film, then gets more and more intense.  Collin Ferrel is excellent, as is Ralph Fiennes.  Recommended.

Saturday we were bored, so we went to see "Taken 2".  Mindless action flick; not bad, but we were laughing through much of it, pointing out the absurdity of just about every decision the characters made.  You know how some movies stick with you long after you've seen them?  Well, this one left my brain the minute the credits rolled.

Predestination - based on a Heinlein story.
a bit like Looper but I found it more interesting - less flash and bang, more character development and interaction.
I will watch it again.

I know some of you are in the same age group, so the new "Thunderbirds Are Go" is quite frankly, a hoot.

Here's the new intro:

There is no spoon. Which sucks because I have a pudding cup.

Yesterday I finished "Fortitude", an amazing TV show which begins like a Scandinavian crime drama/thriller, but with each consecutive episode turns towards a pure horror. Good cast, fascinating, cold atmosphere (as the action takes place somewhere on Spitsbergen) and perfect soundtrack by Ben Frost. One of the best shows I've seen lately. Highly recommendable.

I did and I still liked it - may set up my own time loop of comments.
