NEW - Robert Davies : Terrestre
« on: December 06, 2009, 11:52:25 AM »
Now available:

Robert Davies: Terrestre

Terrestre (of the Earth) is an interpretation of the myriad details of a dappled
and intimate earthly landscape ... an understated set of pastoral meditations
that reveal a very mature and consistent artistry.

Mesmerizing and very listenable drone based works. Sure to please fans of
Robert's earlier work, and followers of the subtle drone tradition passing
through Mathias Grassow, Oophoi, and Alio Die.

This release also brings a change in style and packaging for DataObscura releases.
The CD case is now an unbreakable poly case, still with a spine and readable album
title that is so important for shelf storage. The insert has a new and improved graphic
design. We think you will enjoy the new changes.

Fantastic album!

It reminds me of some of Steve Roach's drone-based work or some stuff from Matthias Grassow.

I imagine a kind of natural scenery. Not one of those huge landscapes, but more a secluded garden or an old graveyard. There's going on something, but we can't really say what...

Favorite track: possibly "Perceptual Adaption"

Only thing that baffles me is the mixing. Is it just me or is there really something missing in the upper mids/lower heighs in most tracks?

Good to hear it, Tobias.
I'll pass your remarks on to Robert. Thanks.

Yes, he is definitely a poet of intimate, forgotten, and overgrown gardens ...
the small rather than the expansive landscape.

And I know what you mean about the frequency gap ... especially around 2k to 4k.
I have a suspicion that in a number of tracks he might be slowing down
the playback of some material, thereby pitch-shifting/lowering the overall range.
I usually have to do a low roll-off to remove some very low end.
But it must be contributing to his sound. Its very listenable music.
