Free Effective PC Anti-Virus
« on: December 11, 2009, 05:19:48 PM »
It solved some problems for me tonight:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/products/mse.aspx

It's a free program. The quick scan found nothing but the full scan found the 2 problems I was having.

(Sigh) 130000 files, and 2 were corrupt. It was enough.

Anyway, so far this program seems ideal-- recommended as a free alternative to the expensive ones like McAfee.

I run Avast, but I don't think it's very good at catching malware.  I'll check this out.  Thanks for the link.

My pleasure. Don't forget to run the full scan, even if it takes a bit of time.

I run Avast for AV, I run Spybot Search&Destroy (free/donation-ware), as well as Lavasoft's free version of Ad-Aware. This program seems to be about the same as the latter two mentioned, or at least Spybot. I recommend both of the latter for malware stuff. I like free software that works fairly well. I am more leary of MS getting into the foray again. Just my $0.02 worth.

I run the same setup; no problems ever.  I'm trying to get away from Microsoft product as much as I can; I just don't trust their stability or long-term reliability.

I recommend Sandboxie to avoid many of these problems before they begin.

I run absolutely no Active anti virus, for many reasons...
I use only online scanners, from time to time when I feel the need...
NOD32 and F secure is good.. Kaspersky online scanner I use also..

If you only use your brain and is careful on what you click at and learn
what sites that look suspicious  you do not need antivirus... imo..

LOL - looks like basically a VM type product. Interesting and may be less resource intensive vs using MS's Virtual PC or VMware (I use latter to check out linux releases/windows build to keep from infecting my system should I choose to go to riskier places ;-) ).

That's effectively what Sandboxie is, and although it does what it says, it increases the demands placed on your system to run a given process.  It really isn't that much different from installing VMware for Windows, creating a Windows Virtual Machine, and running your applications within the VM install of Windows rather than in the host install of Windows.  In other words, that works fine unless you're running up against your machine's capabilities for processor speed or data throughput, in which case that extra added layer of interpretation will mean you hit your limit earlier than you might otherwise.  If you're doing stuff that's not processor intensive, or not writing a huge stream of data to the hard drive very quickly, it's fine.  If you're trying to work on many tracks of 24 bit audio with a bunch of plugins and soft synths and samplers, you'll be constrained at a lower threshold by using Sandboxie, VMware, Parallels or that sort of thing.

I only use Sandboxie for certain tasks (web browsing, or running suspect programs) ... i don't run other things in it. So it doesn't affect my computer much at all. And its not the computer I record on.

Since I am still using the WIN7 R2 I can still try this software for free...
I did visit some strange site..that did try to steal my credit card... I did try about
4 different virus scanners... Symantec and This one give actually find most threats...to my big surprise..
I was first skeptical that this would have anything to offer..but it looks good...
PREVX is still in the top of the field though I think...they seem to be first to have a protection for every new virus.
