Windharfe (Aeolian Harp) Livestream
« on: February 26, 2010, 04:08:33 PM »
Hi all.
This evening I finally put a livestream of our Windharfe (Germ.: "wind harp") online. Windharfe is a custom-built drone instrument, an electric harp that is mounted on a huge mast outside the Musisches Zentrum. Unfortunately the levels aren't optimized yet, the sound is clipping from time to time...
Please notice that the Windharfe will only work when there's some wind outside (like right now).

More info (only in German) and pics: http://www.uni-ulm.de/einrichtungen/muz/emu/windharfe.html
Even more (also in German only): http://www.luise37.de/windharfe/windharfen.htm

PS: The stream is only mono right now, but we will set up a stereo stream soon. The problem is that we had to use a wireless transmitter from the harp to the icecast server and the one we have right now only transmits one channel...

Yeah, it's intermittent, and clips a bit, but it does make a neat sound. Cool idea!

Thanks! I hope we will be able to improve the sound quality next week. It sounds a bit duller than it should, I suppose the pickups need a replacement. I'm also not very satisfied with the wireless transmitter we use.. but maybe I'll manage to tweak it a little bit next Friday.

But be prepared for how it sounds during rainfall or snow...

Maybe you could broadcast at bit through Stillstream? I wonder what Darrell would think.

He's pretty open to experiments. Once he broadcasted a 6-hour piece of mine.

Yeah, perhaps I'm gonna ask him if we managed to improve the sound quality.

Btw here are some "studio" recordings of the Windharfe made by Dieter Trüstedt, the leader of our experimental music group and also inventor of that kind of aeolian harp:

http://www.uni-ulm.de/muz/windharfe/wind-nr5.mp3
http://www.uni-ulm.de/muz/windharfe/erde-nr1.mp3

The first two samples are excerpts from the Windharfe CD by D. Trüstedt.
The 3rd sample is an excerpt from the track Erde (194,71 Hz = Ca. G) on the Compilation "Planetentöne", a quite interesting release, also featuring Klaus Wiese (RIP).

FYI: There's currently some rain outside which can clearly be heard in the different sound of the harp.

Thanks Anthony.

Due to the present European windstorm Xynthia (45 fatalities in France) the harp is now clipping a lot...

Sorry to hear about the storm.

The wind harp sounds great, and it looks very impressive!

This is great! I've been listening for most of the afternoon as I go about other tasks. Thanks for posting.   Harry
