Earth Mantra netlabel
« on: March 21, 2010, 01:43:45 PM »
This may be old news to some, but I wanted to pass along a great find in the ambient netlabel Earth Mantra (www.earthmantra.com).   Fans of Hypnos music should find a lot to their liking here, and it is all completely free!  I don't know how/why they do it, but it's pretty amazing.  They don't even accept donations, except to donate to a list of worthy charities they recommend if you want to.  They have 119 releases, mostly from unknown artists, but there are also releases by the likes of Tony Gerber and Kit Watkins.  Definitely worth checking out. But, of course, keep buying Hypnos CDs, too!

Phil -

I'll happily second this. I've been a big fan of Earth Mantra since its inception, and though I haven't kept up on all the releases, I've listened to a lot of them. There's a ton of good stuff here, and it's all free. The ones I'll recommend most are Lucette Bourdin, Arcticology, and Phillip Wilkerson. And there's the guy who started it all, Darrell Burgan, who records under the name of Palancar. His music is worth checking out as well. There's plenty here to keep anyone busy for a while.

Articology is a favorite of mine as well, and another friend I recommended the site to.  Excellent floating music.

Oh, EM, it was the first netlabel I encountered on the web about two years ago and still keep visiting and downloading their stuff. Palancar, Arcticology, Lucette Bourdin and many more artists. I especially like their idea to promote unknown musicians.

Earth Mantra is pretty great.  About 2 months I went on a hunt for hour long pieces, and EM had plenty of them.  I really enjoy Singularity by Palancar, Excursion One from Altus, and a couple others.  I also can't forget about Tange's "A Bucket Full Of Tange" which is 11 hours of music, all for free.  There's some pretty great stuff on there; one of the better netlabels out there.

Was just listening to Emerald Adrift off of Earth Mantra earlier today.

Scott mentioned that Darrell Burgan runs Earth Mantra - you might also be interested to know that Darrell runs StillStream.com as well.  ;-)

Yes, he's doing a wonderful job with this. I've released my first two releases through him in the past year or so and also contributed to the 100th release compilation (4 discs). And I check out some of the other artists out there. He was the 3rd NetLabel I came across (first was Dark Winter www.darkwinter.com and participated in one of their compilations, second was a french one as he was going to put out my 2nd disc but disappeared, Bennekea I think was the name, said he was coming back too).

That Tony Gerber album on Earth Mantra is sounding really nice with good doses of electric guitar, flute and synths.  It's a nice spacemusic album but it sounds fresh, not dusty or cliche'd .  I'd also recommend one of the more recent releases, Jacob Newman's Reflections & Diffusions.  It does seem like it came right out of the Hypnos roster - weird sound collages and big walls of sound, both dark and light.  It's near-perfect.  The only thing is a few of the tracks are so short, but because they're so good, it's forgivable.  I also downloaded Kit Watkins Thought Tones Vol. 2 which sounded pretty nice- I agree there's plenty to keep the listener busy there.

I also remember that there's a DVD (well files to burn onto DVD) on there which struck me as very cool.  I'd love to check it out, but unfortunately I forgot who it was or what the name was.  Does anyone know which release it was?

I know that Kit Watkins has two DVD releases on Earth Mantra:
This Time and Space -- Very trippy stuff...  ;D

The Gathering -- Haven't seen this, but it appears to be a recording of a live performance.

Thanks for the tip on this, I was unaware of Earth Mantra. I downloaded a couple albums and have been needle-dropping thru the tracks. There is some great stuff here. Too much stuff. I'll try to stream an album a day.  ;)

Pretty sure This Time And Space was it, thanks.  I didn't know there was another one, especially of a live performance which should be cool since I've never seen how ambient music is performed live.
