Ghost Box
« on: June 15, 2010, 06:45:40 AM »
For anyone that would like to try something a bit different, I'd recommend the above record label.  My particular favourite artist on the label is "The Advisory Circle".

It's difficult to describe exactly except to say it's electronic, heavily sampled and the themes include British Sci-Fi, public information films, hammer horror and a great deal of sonic imagery from the early seventies.

They're doing an offer on Cds at the moment so now is probably a good time to check them out.

I'd be interested to hear what people think about them.

I couldn't agree more strongly with this recommendation.  I've thoroughly enjoyed everything I've heard from Ghost Box; the Advisory Circle is especially good, as is Belbury Poly's "From and Ancient Star" and Roj's "The Transactional Dharma of Roj."  The music evokes that great feeling of nostalgia for things I've never experienced that The Caretaker also evokes in me, though in a different way.  Really great music.

Glad it's not Just me!

In connection with this, it transpires that "Jon Brooks" the artist behind "advisory circle" used to go under the name of "King of Woolworths".  I suppose since the demise of Woolworths in the UK he had to change his name (only joking!).

Still, three great albums, the last 2 in particular.  Very cheap to pick up as well, I managed to pick up all 3 for about 10 new.  Here's couple of links.

Thank you for the information about King of Woolworths I didn't know about this, even though I'm quite a fan of everything on Ghost Box.  I'll be picking these records up for sure.
