Chat feature in this Forum?
« on: January 30, 2008, 11:29:58 AM »
Is there any interest in a Chat (real-time multi-user) room kind of application within this Forum?  I've been thinking about installing one, but not sure how much use it would get.

I assume that if it was relatively seamless, some people would use it, but I'd like to get a general response to gauge interest, before I spend the time setting it up.

Personally, I find the Forum itself close to real-time. Not sure I'd use chat.

It depends on who is doing the chatting and what the topic is, but I may drop in now and then. Can't be more specific than that, though.

when you tried this before i recall that it was used very little and fizzled out all together. or am i thinking of another site?
no need for a real time chat - imo.
all the best and God bless

There was briefly a chat feature on the hypnos site (not part of the forum) years ago, but it was a clumsy solution, not well-integrated into the rest of the site.  The one I've been contemplating is an integrated part of the Forum software, so it would befairly natural  to click the "chat" button on the bar up top, and see who was in the chat room.  Though there seems to be little eagerness for this feature, I might check into installing it at some point, if the time investment isn't too great (or if others speak up and say they'd really like to have it)

I would check in - though I think we block chat at work so that limits daytime use (not that I should be chatting then anyway!)

I think there would need to be a schedule of some sort so folks would know others were going to be in the chat room. Or at least some way to see who was there.

I'm not a "chatter" to start with but... would you need Java to participate?
I've sometimes felt like dropping into the StillStream chatroom during Kite Radio
but I've always got Java turned off. Is that an old-fashioned precaution now
or still a sensible safeguard?

Not actually about chatting - not sure where to ask this.

Mike any chance of not having total logged in time showing - scares the hell out of me - could have been doing all sorts of things in that amount of time :o :o :o
