Your favorite Mathias Grassow albums?
« on: July 21, 2010, 04:58:53 PM »
After exploring more of Mathias Grassow, I'm pretty amazed about his sheer output of music. Much I have never heard before,
and I'm curious as to some of your favorites (to serve as a guide and of general interest).
Note: the albums can be collaborations with Grassow also.

Thanks for any feedback.

You've given me a hefty list to explore Terraform, thanks for the quick feedback. Interestingly,
Your personal favorite, expanding horizon, is part of my library as well, and is a definite favorite.
I'm also familiar with the quiet calling series, inner path, and a couple which did not make your list
(ie Arcanum, which i think is excellent), but most here i have yet to explore. Thanks Terraform

I have MOST of those listed above and more.  If I had to choose ONE, probably would be Silent Lucidity from 1993.  This was originally a cassette but Mathias burned it to disc for me.  I'm sure you could order it from him.

1. Expanding Horizons (although, it's probably more of Alio Die here)
2. Himavat
3. Mercurius
4. Lanzarote Concerts

PS: it seems that the quality of his work has suffered after the passing of K Wiese, IMO (...not a fan of his latest collabs...)

re: Klaus Wiese comment above:  Grassow hasn't released much lately anyways, so I wouldn't say the quality has necessarily gone down...

Quality was probably the wrong word to use in my comment...a change of direction is better. That's in regard to his ethno-based, drone and indian flavored percussive works of the past versus his current collabs with T Weiss

Strange how everybody has different "favorites". But I guess when you release that many CDs, that's bound to happen.

>> Joe R : you're right, difficult to make a single choice in this vast discography.
I had the same problem with Steve Roach and Robert Rich

About Mathias Grassow, i'll say :
Solo release : Namakar & Lanzarote concert
Collaborative work : Holy domain (with Klaus Wiese) & Arcanum (with Amir Baghiri and Rudiger Gleisberg)

These are (to me) tremendous and unmissable works !!

solo recordings I love:
Dissolution, Sphere, Space, Eclipse.

Grassow and Baghiri - True North, my favourite joint effort.
Grassow and Jim Cole - The Hollow, also good.
