Beyond Ambient (Let's hear your non-Ambient music)
« on: September 16, 2010, 02:42:19 PM »
Hi.

I'm wondering what kind of music you make besides Ambient (if any).

Speaking of myself... when I started making music I was mainly into Techno (Projects "Q33U" and other), Dub Techno ("Deep Night Session/DNS" project), switched to Clicks & Cuts/Electronica/Ambient ("Gras" Project) until I came to Ambient/Dark Ambient which seems to be the best genre to express what I want to express. Still I'm always trying to look beyond the horizon and try some other Genres and actually I'm trying hard to create something more monotonous, more functional, more club-oriented.

However here are some of my most recent non-Ambient (but still Ambient-influenced) tracks (all of them not more or less unfinished):

Untitled (Deep Techno/Techhouse) http://www.falsemirror.de/uploads/untitled.mp3
The Art Of Drowning (Techno) http://www.falsemirror.de/uploads/the_art_of_drowning.mp3
Dub XI (Dub Techno) http://www.falsemirror.de/uploads/dub011.mp3

Now let's hear some of your non-Ambient music productions!

I'll have to see what I have ripped from cassette...   I've done minimal techno, industrial disco, lots and lots of bar band rock, covered a billion songs, played in jazz band in high school (trumpet) and college (piano).

Fun thread!

Seren, Loren: the question was rather to ask for your OWN music (in terms of own productions), nevertheless I love the Gamelan stuff (as well as the influence in your albums, Loren)

Here's an old track "Gravity", which I have on my drive, that's from the early eighties.
I come from a rock background but was compelled to lay down space music too.
It's from somewhere on my road towards ambient...

Totally sounds like eighties sound, it somehow reminds me of the soundtrack of the computer game TFX (1993) which I liked a lot. TFX was actually the first computer game I ever possessed.

(Great to find the entire soundtrack on youtube... takes me back)

Fractal techno?

Industrial?

OK,

Incubus - on the EMportal album - not sure what it is but it is not ambient.

Visiting Berlin - an honouring nod at the berlin school sequencer electronics.

Oh and I play frame drums and a large taiko one....

Currently I am working on ambient projects with Lisa Walker, whose release "The Grooved Whale" was well received in 2002 (http://www.groovedwhale.com/music/grooved-whale-reviews) and Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos. An offshoot of my work with Alcvin has been a trio that blends shakuhachi flute, taiko and western percussion and electric bass and electronics.

Used to play keyboards with Shroud of Bereavement, check out their video(s)? over at Youtube. Neoclassical doom death metal. I love the new song. I was learning it before I left and it's changed a lot from what it originally was, but it is awesome IMHO. Too bad I didn't get to play it live!

Here's a few recent demos from the duo I'm in. It's more acoustic-based but there's some electronics in there as well.

Atmospheric doom metal is my favorite metal genre. And I see a lot of potential evolution in that particular genre.

You can try this - a collection of tracks from 3 conceptual albums I am working on. Don't really know what genre it slots into though. It's a mixture of all sorts of influences and styles.
http://www.auralscapes.com - go to the 'audio' page. Would be curious to hear any comments.

There is a page full of rock songs (mostly keys-strings-drums trio - mostly progressive garage) at

http://soundcloud.com/often-coiled

and a few non-ambient pieces - spoken word, experimental voice ("Negotiated") and a cappella ("Twilight Requiem") on my personal Soundcloud page

http://soundcloud.com/jeffsampson

I'd be quite surprised if most of "us" didn't come from a non-ambient background, and it's nice to see some people are currently playing in more than one field.

You have some interesting material on those pages Jeff. Will give it a listen in the week and maybe comment on them. Just gave it a quick once-over but will absorb them when I have more time.

I should have pointed out back when this topic was new that I am in all of those videos as a performer so I think it fit the topic at the time.
Take care.

Here's a track from the late 90's; I was waaay into Skullflower at the time.  I have hours and hours of stuff in this vein; overdriven guitars, feedback, slow plodding rhythms buried low in the mix: psychedelic improvised noise rock.  The polar opposite of SunDummy stuff.

This track starts off meandering along aimlessly; then a rhythm kicks in, and it takes off...
