dude... A single 3' Mogami cable is $45 and increasing length (quantity) doesn't seem to do much much in the way of price discount. If I were to upgrade my studio and re-wire with all Mogami I'd be looking at about $10,000 minimum. Ridiculous.

That's why I make my own. You can buy a box of Belden cable which is 500-1000 feet of cable, that will set you back $150-250 a box. Then you buy all the connectors which are the most expensive part. 15 years ago when I did this I think I used 3 boxes of cable, but I was using a mixer and many patch bays at the time, most of those cables are now in boxes in my garage since I use less stuff now. The high end Belden stuff is just as good as Mogami, a lot of pro studios use it, just doesn't have the hip factor any more. I bought most of my stuff from full compass, they had pretty good prices on the stuff back then. I don't remember the exact type of cable I used, but here is their belden listings:

I'm pretty sure these are the connectors I bought, they still work fine after 15 years:

BTW I'll be using some of these cables at SoundQuest Fest.  ;D
Take care.

I'm good with soldering and I had made some basic connectors years ago - but just a few. So yeah, I could go that route. I'm not convinced it would make a noticable difference though.

Loren - well, if you're not using those cables feel free to sell them to me!

Here is another strong contender for high quality cables. Try out www.monoprice.com

They sell very high quality cables for an incredible price. If you look at audio cable -professional they have some nice ones that can hardly be made at that price. Check it out!

Chad.....thanks for the proaudiola.com link.  I Purchased a pair of xlr to 1/4" trs cables from them today!

I really like that you can custom order the cable lengths & configuration, its usually hard to get short run cables for chaining outboard gear
