help with getting photos off of iPhone!
« on: October 14, 2010, 12:09:01 PM »
When I connect my iPhone to the PC (all 4 of them and my wife's mac), the DCIM photo drive no longer pops up.  I can not access them through iTunes either.  I've tried everything I can think of from 3rd party programs to shutting down iTunes helper in processes, etc.  Apparently, Apple has this policy of if you have any photos in your photos directory on your iPhone that were not taken with your iPhone then you can no longer access the photos directory - unless you delete any and all photos not taken with the particular iPhone.  I can't do this as not only are there a bunch of photos that I saved into my photos directory from my wife and friends that I would like to keep - I also don't know which ones aren't mine!

I think this is stupid and incredibly annoying that Apple would have this policy.

Now, I did find a 3rd party program late last night that was working and I was able to transfer all my photos!  YAY!  Until every freakin' photo had a giant watermark in the middle of each image... I didn't notice until the 800th photo was transferred.  Apparently if I want these photos - 95% of which I took - I have to shell out cash to buy a 3rd party program that operates and looks just like iTunes...? Gha!

The only way I could get my photos for free is by e-mailing them 1 by 1 to myself, but I can't e-mail 1,800 pictures to myself. That would take weeks.

Anyone here have any suggestions or know any tech geeks they can ask.  I've searched the interweb for several days and found many others in the same situation but with no solutions that worked.

I'm pretty expert-like on most Apple stuff but have never kept photos on iPod Touch or iPhone, so I'm not sure.

There must be an app like Senuti that lets you access the raw files on the phone's drive. I helped a co-worker use Senuti to get his music off his iPod when his Mac hard drive failed, and it was a little bit of a pain in the ass, but certainly better than re-ripping hundreds of CDs.  Basically you just need to force some computer to see your iPhone as a portable USB drive and access the files that way.

Did you see this discussion, Jesse:

You're using Windows, right?

Mike - right.  I tried everything I could think of and what was recommended on various discussions on the web and nada.  I tried resetting autoplay (windows' name for automatically detecting a device upon plugin via USB) and still nothing.  This one particular program that was able to see the photos and transfer them (but with a nasty watermark) allowed you to manage the audio files freely - just not the photos, that costs extra, obviously because countless millions are screwed otherwise so why not make a buck on what Apple should be allowing legitimate users access to.

I'm going to keep searching for a freeware prog that will do this.  There's got to be one out there.  I remember years ago using one on a locked iPod to get audio files off of it.  Don't remember which program that was though.  I notice some of these 3rd party progs are also defunct or operating under dated software, so while it may look promising to use their product, it won't work with my current Vista.

Do you have another computer you can borrow, that isn't accustomed to loading this iPhone into iTunes, so you can connect your phone and get it to mount up as a portable drive?  Of course, even if that worked you'd need another portable drive to get the files off that computer and back onto your own computer.

Is one of these apps what you're talking about?

Mike - went through all of those replies and tried a couple more things and nothing.  Can not get to the photos.  I resorted to downloading an illegal copy of this program called CopyTrans but that only dealt with the mp3 files.  :'(

Have you given this program a try? iPhone Explorer, free for Mac and Win: http://www.macroplant.com/iphoneexplorer/
You can look through everything on the phone and it allows you to drag and drop as well. I use the Mac version.
Hope this helps.

Hi Antdude - Does this mean you can use an iPhone or iTouch without using iTunes?
(I'd be more inclined to get one in the future if I could avoid iTunes - which,
judging from Lynn's misadventures with her iPod, can be a royal pain in the pod.)

iPhone Explorer looks like it will do what Jesse wants, but it's not an alternative to iTunes exactly. It's not an mp3 player app, but a file system manager.  I don't think it would display your iTunes library, albums, artists or whatever.

Dragging and dropping music files from our hard drives (without anything trying to synchronize) would be just fine for us.   8)

Thank Aliens Antdude!  This worked... countless MAC & PC forums with so called "experts" and the solution was here.  Nice.  Thanks a million!  :D

Glad it worked. I should have specified it's really just a file manager for your iPhone as Mike mentioned. I think it's a nice little back-up app for anyone who owns an iPhone, PC or Mac.  Now, back up your stuff!  ;)
