What can we do to liven this place up a little?
« on: November 16, 2010, 03:35:13 PM »
Things seem a bit stale here on the Hypnos Forum.  Lots of people still visit here, and "hits" to the forum aren't down at all, but there are fewer new posts.  An increasing number of those posts are self-promotion, "for sale" links, radio playlists and "now listening," and while those are perfectly fine things to talk about, I wonder what we could do to get everybody more interested.

I'm not just complaining, but looking for suggestions regarding anything people would like to see around here.

Does anybody think it would make sense to eliminate the forum sub-sections, so all new postings go into a single time-sorted area? This wouldn't have worked before, when there were hundreds of new posts per day in dozens of topics, but now there are usually only a handful of new topics per day. This isn't a change I'm likely to make, but I'm trying to consider all kinds of things to make this a more active community.

I've considered switching to a different forum software, just to enable some different features and interface options. For example, phpBB was the software we used in the "golden age" of this forum, and there are some interesting add-ons for it.

Does anybody care about things like better integration with outside social networks like Facebook and Twitter? I'm not sure what that would add to the forum, and I'm hesitant to make a section of this forum a dumping-ground for everything tweeted by every Forum member... but I'll throw it out there to see what anyone thinks.

One other possibility is to add a section for "user blogs," where some forum members could have their own section for posting reviews, podcasts, opinions, or whatever. This could be accomplished either by sectioning off a place for approved users to blog, or by integrating with the existing off-site blogs of certain users so that content is mirrored here.

This would be a great time to sound off if you have certain complaints or wishes for what you'd like to see at the Hypnos Forum.  Should we focus on offering members-only content? We could set up a part of the forum where anonymous browsers couldn't reach, and post extra special stuff.  Do you wish more recording artists and label owners would contribute here?  Is there anything on the Hypnos forum you'd rather see less of?

Any input appreciated... fire away!

I still come by lots. It would be really neat to hear from some of the old timers in blog fashion, about projects/reviews and such. I am always impressed by the greats who stop by this forum.

I definitely have no complaints about people not coming here any more. There's just as much browsing & viewing of the forum as ever, so it can seem "dead" when in fact lots of visitors are reading lots of stuff.

I figure it's worthwhile to see if anybody has anything they'd like to see around here.

I've noticed it's been quiet here recently - but I like the format of the forum.
It reads well and gives little hints about the most recent postings.

A deluge of triviality from Twitter postings here doesn't appeal to me.
I have Twitter for that!

Adding more Jim Brenholts', Bill Binklemans or Alan Locketts would be effective!
I miss them all.

Well - I think SunDummy's got an interesting thought there - although a tumblr might make more sense... may I suggest  f***yeahhypnos! as a tumblr name?

I like this forum because of the people here and the longevity of many of us... it does hit peaks and valleys - and we're definitely in a valley.  (oddly - rM has been 'up' lately after quite a lengthy valley...).

My personal opinion is keep it a forum...   there's something very clean about it.     I struggle daily to make rM easier to navigate and find stuff.  Once it falls off front page it's in almost a black hole.   Same thing here of course... but the forum format forces a bit more structure than the Ning format with all of it's blogs, forum, photos, videos, etc...  They're just two different beasts.    Obviously I love rM as much as here.

The only thing I wish was easier here was embedding stuff...  I can't embed soundcloud or flickr here - and those are two major things that I wish I could.  To post a picture from flickr is a bit of a pain doing "view source" etc...   posting a "work in progress" or a spammy album preview for a new release is much easier with music.  ;-)

of course - opening up html here - opens up different cans of worms when a spammer gets through...

More thoughts as they hit me.

You know, I already spend so much time keeping spammers away, I think it would be OK to enable HTML. I'm going to give that a try and see if it encourages more posting of embeds, images and so on.

OK, basic HTML has been enabled, and it works OK.  The bulletin board software does not enable some of the more advanced HTML tags, but these are supported:

Code: [Select]
<b>, <u>, <i>, <s>, <em>, <ins>, <del>
<a href="">
<img src="" alt="" />
<br />, <hr />
<pre>, <blockquote>

I'll have to see if there's a convenient way to embed videos, audio clips and so on.

I've also noticed that it's a bit slow recently. I'm still here, however, at least twice a day except for the last week when I was on vacation. I like the forum format as it stands now, although I wouldn't be against additions. Twitter and Facebook don't interest me at all, but then again I'm old. User blogs sound interesting and I always enjoy reviews ( I, too miss Jim, Bill and Alan ).
Never regret money spent on old books, old dogs or old friends.

Perhaps a bit of a slowdown in posts is inevitable as people participate more in things like Facebook and Twitter, and don't have as much "need" for places like this.

Again, not complaining. Just as many people visit here as ever did.  And I'm as guilty as anyone of sometimes going into "lurker" mode for a number of weeks, before I decide to re-engage.

Just thought I'd give everyone an opportunity to suggest changes or improvements they'd like to see.

Nah..I like coming here.....I like to see who's releaseing new stuff, new upcoming ambient artists....what Lena is doing:)....
yeah I do admit at times the spammers(people who post constantly about new stuff coming out is a little overblown) but other than that....I am the guy who just sits back in the room and watches everyone else......
I mean...for example, I am a lurker right now due to I switched creative gears and decided to start working on my novel again so I decided to put music on the back burner esp since it seems people are not interested in my music it seems:(....BUY my music, The Ancients at www.imagineerrecords.com

anyways...
enjoying this place...

I like it as it is, though it may just mean I am comfortable......I like the look and general layout.

T****er and fa****ok don't interest me either, but then I may be old too.

Blogs sound interesting and reviews are always great to read - I just don't seem to have the time to do them myself - that is a sad lack.

another forum I am on has a button for newest topics which accesses in time order the most recent new responses - that can be helpful as I don't have to flick through all the areas to find the new input - but does run the risk of only concentrating on the new input.

I am not a great computer fan, so I don't tend to think of ways to improve it - I just value the community that is here.

I am also thankful to you Mike for both the label and the forum being important enough to you to want to consider change and ways of improving it, hopefully the outcome will be as successful as the new Digipaks......

.....any plans to radically change anything else in your life ;D

Of course the HTML is there if you need it, and just as easily ignored if you don't need it.

BB Code lets you do most of the things those HTML codes will do, anyway links, images, text formatting.

It appears that setting up media embeds (youtube, soundcloud) would involve some code editing to the forum software -- something I'm capable of doing (there are a few other extensions and modifications running already) but I don't want to bother unless/until I'm sure we'll be sticking with this software.  No point in modding SMF 1.11 and then switching to SMF 2.0 or phpBB or something else.

Mike - I'm on the newest version of SMF and it has this function - see all since my last visit.. It's handy.

And even the newer version didn't support soundcloud embeds last time I checked.  My version doesn't.

Golly, that's one thing this forum really needs -- more youtube videos of kids falling off their skateboard, or lip-syncing their favorite songs into a webcam.
