Holiday Movies - your favorites and why
« on: November 29, 2010, 07:10:53 AM »
What movies do you tend to watch year after year?  Which ones bring up memories for you?   New, old, classic, silly, serious...

I don't care how much they're overplayed on TV every year, A Christmas Story and It's A Wonderful Life are both great.

I forgot to mention Christmas Vacation. Chevy Chase is great, Randy Quaid is great, Brian Doyle-Murray is great, "Todd and Margot" are great. Even Juliette Lewis and her headband are great. Oh, and Rusty was played by Johnny Galecki of Big Bang Theory!

My all time favorite is Scrooge with Alistair Sim in 1951.  I remember it playing on tv every Christmas late at night and sitting by the fireplace watching it.  Later I remember getting up early with my sister waiting for mom and dad to get up - and Scrooge would be on then.  There's just something magical about it in both that it's a great version of Scrooge - and the memories tied up with it for me.

I also love Miracle on 34th Street - the old black and white version.  What a great movie.

We also toss in the dvd for White Christmas every year.   Sometimes Holiday Inn which is where the song White Christmas originally came from.

A Christmas Story used to be the be all end all movie at my parents house and I loved it for years - but I think I just finally got a little burned out on it.  Still - every so often - it's awesome to watch.

Boris Karloff's Grinch is probably the greatest Christmas-related thing in the world.

I really like the 1951 version of "A Christmas Carol," the one starring Alastair Sim- he was great in that film!

Oh - I wantt o see that 1938 version - I just read about it!    Review says it's on par or perhaps better than Alistair Sim.  Which is definitely saying something in my book.

I love that George C. Scott was such a pain that he wouldn't wear the night dress thingy... and insisted on wearing a vest.   Bought the dvd cheap last year but haven't watched yet.

Most of my favorites have already been mentioned, but one that has not is Joyeux Noel the story of Allied and German troops who call a ceasefire on Christmas during WWI.
Never regret money spent on old books, old dogs or old friends.

I seldom get tired of A Christmas Story because so much of it reminds me of own youth. Not a movie but I try to never miss A Charlie Brown Christmas - I remember watching it the first year it was broadcast so it's very much a nostalgic thing for me. Kathryn and I usually watch Love, Actually at Christmas time because it's a great Christmas time movie, funny, touching and so romantic, esp. the subplot about Colin Firth going to Portugal to ask his former maid to marry him. Don't care for It's A Wonderful Life but am a sucker every year for White Christmas. I love the music and the corny but touching subplot about the old general, plus Danny Kaye is just so much fun to watch.

It has nothing to do with Christmas, but ten years ago, my brother brought Fantastic Planet to our family Xmas party; it's now become a tradition.  Since I'm not spending the holiday with the family, I'll just Netflix it instead.  (oh, and on Thanksgiving a few years ago, we watched "Alive".  Lots of jokes during dinner that year...)

Other than that, I don't watch many holiday movies - seen 'em all too many times.

I don't have any 'holiday' movies that I watch again and again.

But I do like watching films more than once, in particualr 'Harold and Maude' always see soemthing new in it.

Christmas Vacation, totally brilliantly funny

The Santa Claus, would watch this on Christmas Eve when the kids were little, eating lots of nice food and sweets.

Bad Santa, definately for the older ones, hilarious

Bill!  How could I forget A Charlie Brown Christmas?  Wow - yes - watch every single year.  And we totally agree on White Christmas!

We also have a hilarious Christmas with Dean and Frank special that was on tv maybe in the 60's.  It's so wonderfully cheesy and rat pack.   Love it.

Yep on "A Charlie Brown Christmas," and all the old claymation stuff, too.
