Any last-minute 2010 gear purchases?
« on: December 21, 2010, 11:01:08 AM »
Most years I buy a little bit of gear at the very end of December as I find myself thinking, "oh yeah, need tax deductible expenses."

Nothing big this year for me, just a nifty Akai controller that integrates with Ableton Live, and an extra, super-simple pre-amp and USB audio interface by M-Audio.

Anybody buying anything cool at this time of year? Maybe you don't care about tax expenses, but just got a nice bonus from the old day job? That used to be my main reason for buying gear in December, before tax write-offs were a consideration.

No more this year - but I certainly have a 2011 wishlist going!   ;-)

Here are the two different Akai Ableton controllers I looked at. I ordered the small one but I'm starting to think I should have ordered the big one.

Bought recently a Schatten pickup for my nylon string guitar and the preamp to go with it.

Installation wasn't too easy (to say the least !) but I'm pleased with the sound - much better than the guitars I tried with under-the-saddle piezos. Will be using the combination to record the nylon string parts on my next album.

Picked up a Korg Radias rack a short while back.
Mighty fine synth.

I'm getting a melodica & a bell set, (like a xylophone, not actual bells), does that count?

That counts.  I'd say "post pictures" but I know we haven't figured out specifically which one(s) to get, yet.

Hint, hint. Mike, make a note.  ;)

I just bought a Rob Allen bass. By far the best and easiest playing bass I've ever owned, and completely crafted by Rob. Here's a picture, although it really doesn't do justice to the beauty of the wood.

I bought something similar to this recently -- Tascam, not Sony, but the same idea.  Seems quite handy but I haven't made much use of it yet.

Just picked one up off ebay in mint condition for $359.  Excited to introduce field recordings into my compositions.

That Sony does look good.

I have an Edirol R-09. My only concern with it is its not tightly
constructed and can creak a bit in your hand if not careful, or not on a tripod.
Hopefully the Sony is sturdy and solid.
