Top 10 Ambient/Space Music albums
« on: January 13, 2011, 12:29:34 PM »
Hello, i'm just new here and this is my first post.  I have been a fan of Jonn Serrie, Constance Demby and Jeff Pearce.  I was wondering, what is your Top 10 Ambient/Space Music albums.  This will be your ultimate favorite albums and regularly played on a CD player or iPod.

Thank you for your input.

Difficult to sellect only 10 albums... :(, but let's try:

Robert Rich  "Trances/Drones"  2CD  (my first ever ambient album that opened the gates...)
Michael Stearns  "The Lost World"  CD  (firstly catched by its stunning artwork, I really like the concept behind this album...)
Suspended Memories  "Earth Island"  CD  (Ambient Supergroup, with pearls like "First Blessing" or "Curandera"...)
Steve Roach "Origins"  CD  (with "Connected Underground" as one of my all time fave magics of Steve, Jorge & Linda...)
Vidna Obmana  "The River Of Appearance"  CD  (one of the most beautiful and tranquil albums of all time...)
Robert Rich/Alio Die  "Fissures"  CD  (two masters at their best, hauntingly nostalgic journey...)
Steve Roach/Jorge Reyes  "Vine ~ Bark & Spore"  CD  (with "Gone From Here" Jorge remains in my heart...)
David Parsons  "Ngaio Gamelan"  CD  (album loaded with Middle/Far East exotic...)
TUU  "Invocation: Archive"  CD  (filigree flute work and crystalline sound...)
Temps Perdu?  "Terra Incognita"  CD  (nice tribal/desert ambience from non-desert country, I was immediately hooked by "Desert Horizon"...)

Happy exploring, SpaceNovaRN71!!! ... :)

Thank You for your replies, this will give me some idea what to look or search for.  I am surprised no one has mentioned Numina's excellent album- Sanctuary of Dreams.

Another thread to consider carefully, but in the meantime, Stephen, applaud your choice of Lightwave's "CitÚs Analogues", a superb early cassette of theirs (crying out for CD reissue!) that predates their masterpiece "Nachtmusik" (which isn't quite "ambient" music, but certainly could be termed "experimental space music", awkward as that might sound).

"CitÚs" is such a wonderful album. I did a remaster for Christian and Christoph back in 2001 when they were planning to release their early back catalogue through Beyond the Horizon but nothing has ever come of this. They later wanted to use their own first-generation master tapes but I guess they must have lost touch with their own work at some point and saw no more relevance in re-issueing it. Shame...

Hehehe, not sure DeepR understood the question  :o (j/k) but I must concur that Mystic Chords And Sacred Spaces
(all four discs) are on my list, as well. The other six...hmm, let's see (in no particular order):

* Chad Kettering - Into The Infinite
* Brian Parnham - Between Here And There
* Vidna Obmana - River Of Appearance
* Helpling / Jenkins - The Crossing
* Erik W°llo - Gateway
* Steve Roach - Nada Terma

Many more that are equally immersive, but you asked for ten only. ;-)

Cheers and welcome to the Hypnos Forums.

Mystic Chords is at the top of the list for me.

Tempus Rei is another absolute favorite.

I assume you have heard Constance Demby - Novus Magnificat?
Part 1 is one of my favorite pieces of music ever made.
Not exactly ambient, it's very melodic. I'd call it a new age/classical/spacemusic hybrid.

Yeah, Novus gets left off a lot of lists....not sure why. And while it is melodic, the same could be said for a fair amount of Stearns' stuff, too. Everytime Demby gets to the crescendo near the end (which the subtitle of the CD describes as..."Through the Stargate"), I get chills up and down my spine...there's this huge cosmic WHOOOOOOSH!

Man, if you haven't heard it, give it a listen!
May the odds be ever in your favor.
