Forum upgrade notes
« on: January 18, 2011, 05:23:36 PM »
I've upgraded the Hypnos Forum software today from a very old version (1.1.12) to a more recent version (2.0). The most obvious change will be the appearance or "theme" of the new forum. Most people in the old forum were using the default white and blue theme (which isn't too different from this one) but a few were using the darker themes. Those previously-installed themes were incompatible with the new software so I've had to delete them (or else people would show up here and be unable to navigate) and "forced" all users into the default theme, at least for now.

I don't particularly like this default theme, but it's functional for now at least. If people want to make suggestions as to what they're looking for in alternate themes or appearance (I personally prefer a darker screen), I'll try to take that into account, without creating so many theme options as to create confusion.

Of course, let me know if you're having other problems with this new software. It should mostly work the same as before, though there are some options that work in slightly different ways. My apologies if this change is unwelcome to some people, but it was necessary as I try to manage the increasing flood of incoming spam and SEO-related "junk" accounts. I'll do everything I can to make the forum an even more enjoyable and user-friendly place as the old one... even better if possible.

Feedback and suggestions are welcome of course.

I've installed a dark theme, "Back n Black," which is an update of the optional theme we had in the old version of the forum.  I'm not sure I love it, but it's an option for those of us who prefer something other than the bright white and pale blue.

Looks good, Mike.  Here's hoping the upgrade gives you less grief from those blasted spammers.

Thanks. The first of the automated anti-spam filters has been installed, so I suppose we'll see overnight whether it makes a dent. I've been spending 30-60 minutes per day dealing with all the new forum account signups lately, when 99% of them are fake. I've tried to be really careful not to delete a "false positive," and keep away somebody who actually wanted to join the forum and just hadn't gotten around to posting yet... but this time waste has just become too much.

If anybody hears about someone trying to sign up who has been kept away by the anti-spam measures (or if you're a guest reading this, and it's happened to you) let me know.

I like the new look with the added earth tones and the blue to gray gradience on the sides, but I think it could use some adds that blink a lot and skate across the screen!  :D

I really like the new look, Mike. Much more "warm" and less mechanistic. Just my two cents. Sorry for all the spam trouble you had. That sucks. I hope the change makes your situation a lot better.

Hope the spam fight goes well Miker,

I've changed to the dark one too - perhaps some options on details would be good - or more choice of themes...

I don't normally love getting  up at 5:30 AM but when the alarm went off this morning, my first thought was "I wonder how many spammers signed up on the forum overnight?" Not only did I spend much of yesterday working on the forum software upgrade, and the 'Stop Forum Spam' modification, but usually the first thing I do every morning while I drink my coffee is to sort through all the new accounts and usually delete ALL of them once I've discovered reason to believe they're not legit.

This morning I was very pleased to find not a single new account signed-up. I guess that sounds bad -- don't get me wrong, I'd love to have new "real" members sign up here any time. It's just that I'm so relieved not to have to spend my the first 10 or 20 or 30 minutes of my day checking IP addresses and email addresses and usernames against the spammer databases at Project Honeypot and stopforumspam.com. Instead, I can post a quick message here, and move on to other things.

Thanks, everybody, for keeping a positive attitude about the change. Every time I've changed the forum software before there have been complaints, but this is probably the one instance where the upgrade means no old forum content or features will be lost. Do feel free to keep passing on suggestions and feedback.

Mike, that's awesome you didn't have 80 spam accounts this morning!

Yes - new "real" members are always welcome!

No spammers!   You just gained an extra hour or two of your life each week!

I like the new look. Nothing I liked seems to be missing, the standard colours are soothing
and if the mood takes you - you can still do this:

Sounds like it's working OK for everyone so far.

If you're interested in trying out different themes beyond the default, follow these steps.

Click on the "Profile" link on any page, then click on "modify settings" and then "look and layout."

Near the top it'll tell you which theme you're currently using, which will be "default" unless you've changed it (and if you've already changed it, you wouldn't need these instructions). If you click the "change" link next to that, it'll take you to a page where you can preview the other themes, or select a different one to use.

Right now I'm using the "Overview" theme, which is a medium-dark gray similar to the main hypnos.com site.

OK, thanks Andy.

I'll edit my post above. It's just as simple as clicking the "Profile" button at the top of any forum page, then clicking "Modify Profile >> Look and Layout"

I removed the "change to Forum Membership policy" sticky topic, because the new anti-spam filters have been effective in blocking at least 90% of fake/spammer member signups.  Hurray for technology!
