Is it just me or do a lot of US and Canada-based labels put stickers on the CD jewel cases, containing the artist name and album name as well as a barcode... That alone wouldn't be a problem, but it's impossible to remove them without leaving lots of glue on the jewel case ? I usually use a hair-drier to heat it and then remove it. On Monday I received 5 Kranky records, so it took me at least 15 minutes... argh. Fortunately they don't do that with Digipaks.
Strangely I've never found them on European labels.

Normally these "stickers" are directly on the jewel case. If it's sealed, it's inside the seal. On the Digipaks it's outside. Such a waste of oil

Count me as agreed - I hate stickers on cd's, dvd's, or books.   Yeah - hair dryer is about the only good method and even then you may have goo left over - or it can rip off what's underneath if it's on anything other than plastic.

What's even worse is when you buy a used album or digipak CD and there's a sticker on the PAPER portion of the album/CD.  Drives me insane!

One almost foolproof method I use for removing unwanted stickers and goo is cigarette lighter fluid.  A record store employee told me about it way back in college days (to remove promo stickers from album covers), and it still works.

Hi Jesse,

It works better on hard surfaces (plastic) or the thick cardboard of LP outer sleeves.  I've found it to be far more tricky and less successful on thin CD booklets and inner sleeves.  It seems to work well on digipaks, but you have to be careful not to scrape the cardboard with your nail in removing the sticker.

Speaking of records, I've picked up a few via eBay and WOW, what a bunch of disappointing experiences.  People are not disclosing the condition very accurately at all. Not to mention the standard eBay photo resolution doesn't capture a darn thing. I've had to send one album back... still waiting for refund.  Beware.

The library here in Fullerton used to actually apply a due date sticker  to their books when I checked them out! So many books defaced(CDs too) with layers of them. One day I mentioned how discusting I thought the practice was and about a year later when they did a remodel of the building they dumped the stickers and started giving out printed due slips.

I really hate plastic jewel cases! I have a few CDs that are the cardboard  foldout type with a plastic base for the CD which I like a lot better. I have a Grateful Dead double CD I bought from Starbucks that only has a little small plastic circle on each sleeve for the CDs to affix to. The booklet is attached to the spine of the carboard foldout. The most eco-friendly one I've seen yet, cardboard and plastic probably made from hemp no doubt!

Try GooGone. We find it pretty good for removing the the sticky residues.

Very good for removing glue remains of stickers on jewel cases is also gray duct tape. Just apply it with more pressure for several times on the same place where is the glue until all glue residues will be sticked to the tape and jewel case will be clean. But of course I use it only on jewel cases, I don't use it on digipaks as it might remove part of the artwork/print.

People are naming lots of ways to remove sticker goo from hard plastic, which is useful of course, but this topic was about stickers on paper. Stickers on paper just plain suck because you can't use a lot of solvents, oils, lighter fluid, nail polish remover, liquified uranium, or other goop.

So far I've only found them on jewel cases, luckily never on paper digipaks or anything like that.

Anyway, since i have a lot of vinyl i use in this case just a lighter...warm it up for a while and put the sticker away. In most cases this worrks well, in some cases there is a "stamp" of the sticker left.

You're right, I mis-remembered the first post. It's not just about stickers on paper, but on digipak paper OR directly on the jewel case.

I think the sticker strip is intended to be a theft deterrent.  I generally cut it down the (unglued) middle, then carefully peel off the half-strips on the front and back pieces.  It's a bother.
