CDrs are warped
« on: February 09, 2011, 04:57:21 PM »
In the last couple of week I've been trying to play several of my
Umbra/Penumbra Collection CDrs.  Specifically those in 18x14cm plastic
wallets with art, the disc in another sleeve, sometimes with leaves and
shells.  "Special packaging" Gigi calls it.  The first half plays fine but after
half anhour the music is distorted with a periodic glitch.  While some of you
might appreciate the industrial ambient generated, it rather ruined the likes
of Floating on Night Currents for me.  :(  The disc looks fine. However,
placing it on a flat surface revealed that disc is concave (label upright).

They had been stored vertically but closely packed.  So this is a word of
warning.  Has anyone else experienced this sagging?  How do other Oophoi
fans keep their CDrs?

Can flatness be restored, say by placing discs horizontal between lots of heavy
textbooks for an extended period?

I haven't had this problem myself but CDRs with labels do tend to have more problems that those without labels (either "bare" without printing, or just with printing directly on the disc as we do with Hypnos Secret Sounds discs).

I'd try the idea you suggested, though, putting something flat and heavy on top of the CD and trying it again. I don't know how sticky the labels are but you might even try removing the label, if it seems like it would come off readily.

Thank you indeed.  However, it's worse than two I'm afraid.  I checked 25 discs
(excluding the Dreams series stored elsewhere).  11 had sufficient warping to
generate the noise.   All my Penumbra Collection are affected.  Odd that only
one of the three Signals from the Great Beyond exhibits the problem although
they were stored back to back in the same wallet.

A little Googling indicates that sheer weight of books may not be enough---some
heat applied must be applied for a quick correction.  That sounds a little dangerous
if one over cooks it.  Rather than use an oven I may just wait until the hot summer,
presumably where the original warping occurred and try pressing again if necessary.
Meanwhile I'll leave the 11 under pressure for a couple of weeks to see if it's made
any improvement.

I wouldn't want to remove Gigi's artwork from the discs---that's part of the pleasure
of owning physical copies of the music---and they do seem well attached.

Dr Kappa, please keep me posted about the situation, I'll replace all the defective discs, on both Umbra and Penumbra labels. As for Penumbra, I can easily send you the Penumbra Collection discs, which contain 3 titles on a single disc.

I think I'll check mine too, since I have a few Umbra and Penumbra discs, which I haven't listened to for some time...
