Cans.....Whats on your head?

I wrote a review for head-fi but I'm putting it up here as well...

This is my review of the T1's. I purchased a pair from Meier-Audio in Germany and I paid €1900 for the entire combo including headphones, headpone-amplifier and DAC. This price is including a very nice discount. I received them on Tuesday this week (3/27/2012) and I've been breaking them in every day since then. This is actually the first product I own were I experience a very obvious break-in and the headphones have improved alot of time. The gear I've been using to feed the headphones with are all Meier-Audio products: Corda Arietta and the Corda StageDAC (+a computer with FLAC-files). The sound is extremely transient fast. It sounds like they reveal everything in the recording. Or atleast I hear alot of things I didn't before (what a cliché, I know, but it's true). I'd say it's a very versitale sound. They can make extreme metal sound brutal, and they can make ambient music sound very soft. So I feel the headphone combo bring out what the artist intended. The sound has become more fluid over time which I also like alot. I get the same fluidity as my speakers, but with a higher resolution. The only thing I find I like more in my speakers (Klipsch RF82) is the bass and dynamics. But all in all the headphones and Meier-gear is state-of-the-art equipment. Enjoy!

After doing a fair bit of research regarding getting a better pair of phones for mixing, I settled for the Shure SRH840




Initial impressions are promising, much more detailed than my Sennheiser HD280s, a lot more comfortable (the HD280's have very strong clamping), but with slightly less isolation. I was going to get a pair of AKG K550s, but I tried them on in a local hifi shop and I couldn't get a decent seal with them (on my rather large head !) , so I couldn't get a decent bass response.

From what I've read on various forums, you can go a bit mad with the eternal hunt for the 'best', so I went for something affordable that will hopefully do the job for a few years to come.

Using Sennheiser HD25-1 II here. They were a well-wanted Christmas present from my wife in 2008, and they're lovely.

I've been using Sony MDR 7506's for about 15 years. They sound great (very crisp with just the right amount of warmth) and they last forever  ;D

I've used the same Sony MDF 7506 for about the same length of time. Bought them in 95 or 96, when I started making the recordings that evolved into my first album. They're starting to fall apart a little around the earcups but I come back to them again and again.

I have a nice pair of Sennheiser 580s but they're so open I find myself using them less often.

I picked up a pair of those Sony headphones 6 months ago, and I like them too.
They are a good price for the sound quality.

What I don't like, though, is the folding hinges ... they are always collapsing when I pick them up or put them down.
I really should tape them up.

I agree about the hinges, which seem to want to collapse even when you don't want them to. It seems to me this happened less over the years, either because the "spring" decreased or because I figured out better how to handle them.

Also I typed "MDF" but I meant the same "MDR" model Michael mentioned.

Sony MDR - V6, studio monitor headphones.  How do these rate?  Had them around 7 years now and they've been reliable with decent sound quality (for only paying about $80).  My only problem with them is the black rubber coating around the ear cups has been sloughing off and I get little bits of black stuck around my ears/neck.  Not too attractive walking around with it if you forget to check!  ;D

Panasonic RP-HTX7 'franken-phones'



Okay, so I got kind of sucked into the headphone modding thing. I bought these cheap phones (£37) which sound great for the price. I then found out there were quite a few mods people were doing with them to make them sound better - mostly involving Blutack !. I will spare people the sordid details of what I did, but with many modifications and a pair of Shure SRH840 pads attached, they sound really improved. The bass response is mighty and they are probably the most comfortable phones I've owned. Isolation is much better now as well.

Indulging myself this christmas, that and I need a closed back headphone for recording purpose.  Im led to believe these cans translate well with my Focal Twin monitors.  Would be really handy. Lets see.

Very.....came to these monitors from a Mastering setup that had lots of audiophile paraphernalia.  I wanted the full range listening capabilities that B&W 802's, my old speakers, within a smaller studio environment.  The Focal Twins delivered.

FYI.....the Focal headphones really do an honest recreation of what I hear off the the Focal Twin monitors. This is great for Focal monitor owners but I feel it says so much more about the cans themselves.  Much that I do while tracking, which is when I use headphones the most will need little revision while mixing on the main monitors. This should be true for any monitor setup..... Kudos to Focal

I think Seren I got my Grado SR 325 about the same time.....they are fantastic.  I originally got a pair of SR 125's based on mastering engineers singing the praise of grado's for being able to look, so to speak, deep into the music.  The Grado SR 325's are exciting to listen to.  The detail and soundstage is amazing.  The Focals do not have the same openness, they cant they are closed back and I would say that in a way they sound dull next to the Grado's and not that the Grados are hyped at all.  What I perceive as dull is a neutrality which is what Focal is after with these cans in an attempt to engage the pro audio market.  I believe Focal are going to make similar cans geared to the A/V - HiFi market.
