MP3.com = 404

I tried to pull up mp3.com today while I was ripping one of their CD-Rs.

1.  The CD-R was evidently deteriorating despite being shrink-wrapped.  I got a lot of ripping errors.
2.  The site itself is a 404 error.

It's hard to imagine that such a prime domain name lies fallow.   :(

I probably have about 30 CDs from the label when it was active.

We very briefly sold some of these mp3.com CDRs. Had lots of problems with them, lots of returns. Stopped selling them soon after. Also I found the quality of the printed materials to be fairly poor.

I agree, though -- you'd think someone would snap up that domain. Probably the rights-holders want millions for it.

I think the domain was sold some years back and restarted as an mp3 sales site.
Looks like it hasn't gone well for them. I sincerely doubt that they would support any problems
from previous incarnations of the domain. Mike's probably right - they must have paid
many millions for the domain and business name back in the heyday and will try to hold out
to get as much money back as they can.

I'd better start picking out all my mp3.com albums from my collection for backup purposes,
just in case - although I have a copy of "body music" by mara's torment (from mp3.com)
in my desk at work which gets regular play with no problems.

Scott's right - the original mp3.com definitely went under.   Someone bought them out and tried to relaunch it - it never caught on.

Fickle internet users!

;-)

Those DAM cd's (damn cd's) - were a bit fickle as well... None of mine had issues - but I heard of many people having problems.

Actually mp3.com's downfall was it lost its court case with the RIAA:

They settled by basically selling itself off to Vivendi Universal, they tried to run it as as a sale site, but it failed. So they sold it off to CNET who used it as a music portal for information download audio for a while. I guess they have finally given up on it and have now cut it loose.
Take care.

Flac.com seems to be available and would probably be cheaper ;)

I just checked out their site and it works fine. Rumors of its demise have been exaggerated a bit.

I tried it again and indeed, MP3.com was indeed there.

However, a third try got the following:

http://allflac.com/  is however taken...

Not that it looks at all suspicious...

in any way...

no...

no...  couldn't possibly be illegal.

JKN - I actually got a Google notice yesterday that this allflac.com site is selling flac files of my Numina titles (including Hypnos stuff).  Mike, do you send cease and desist type messages to these outfits?  I was about to send an e-mail to their contact... I know I know, it likely falls on deaf ears, but I had the words "illegal" and "lawyer" in the e-mail.

These illegal Russian scam download sites pop up faster than you can knock them down. Sometimes I try writing to them, but if often doesn't make any difference.

I tend to feel anyone who thinks they're getting a great deal on a $2 FLAC download deserves what they're likely to get (which is a bunch of Russian hackers and gangsters running amok on their credit card information).

Good point.

Numina

For grins I sent an e-mail to that allflac.com site that was selling a bunch of Numina titles and asked "from who do you have permission to sell my albums?" Well, a couple weeks later I got a reply from them saying they "have removed all of my albums".  8)

Wow Numina.  That's the first time I've heard one of these sites actually do as you ask.
Congratulations.
