Lucette Bourdin passed away yesterday
« on: February 18, 2011, 02:27:56 PM »
Our own JKN has just posted on Twitter and the Relaxed Machinery site that artist Lucette Bourdin has passed away. Lucette was a talented recording artist who had released music on the Dark Duck and Earth Mantra labels. She will be missed!

From her web site, this statement:

Quote
Lucette Bourdin

February 25, 1954 - February 17, 2011

After a long transformational and creative journey with breast cancer Lucette made her transition into the Light at 10:40 p.m. on February 17th 2011. She will be remembered for her kindness, her art and her music. Her music was especially the product of her transformation through cancer. When diagnosed she said of her desire to create music, "if not now, when?".

A great artist. I've really enjoyed her music since discovering it about a year ago. A beautiful, peaceful and thought provoking sound.

We are not used to these extremely sad and terrible news on this forum, unfortunately the life can be so fragile... We will miss Lucette very much! My sympathy and condolences to the family and friends.

Thanks for posting it, Mike.  I was just coming over here to do it.    I have a lot of her Earth Mantra solo and collab releases (links on the rM post Mike linked to...).

And to find out the part of "if not now, when?" - wow that just hits me.

Yes, it's sad news indeed. I believe Lucette's husband visits the Hypnos Forum occasionally and if he comes by any time soon, I'm sure we'd all like to offer our condolences.

Jeez, that's too bad! I loved her paintings... so beautiful and so ingenious in their simplicity.

Whoa! I'm stunned...certainly had no idea she was ill. This is terrible news indeed.

I felt Lucette was yet another little-recognized ambient composer who was never given her due. I have her complete catalog of recordings and found them to be true gems in the field. The odd communiqué from her only revealed a multi-faceted artist with a fairly limitless breadth of imagination.

My condolences to her family.

While attempting to connect with her on facebook and via her website contact form, I was very fortunate to have spoken briefly with Mrs Bourdin. I asked her what she enjoy doing the most. Her response.. "I enjoy my paintings and making music" and she did both very well..

I had the great pleasure of meeting Lucette a few years ago when I was working for Analogue Haven. She use to come in every couple of months to check out the gear and chat for awhile and to purchase something. I enjoyed her company very much and looked forward to her next visit. After leaving AH we kept in touch on myspace and facebook. But I had no idea she was so ill. She will be missed in this community.
Take care.

Chatting with other artists and fans at Stillstream last night, it seems nobody knew how ill she was.  Gordon McMillan (Tange) played her music for a number of hours last night as a tribute.

Her music made an impact in my life.  She will not be forgotten, but she will be sorely missed.

This is very sad news indeed. I've come to be a big fan of Lucette's music and consider her a great talent in ambient music. I'll be playing a large chunk of music on my show tomorrow in her honor. Rest in peace, Lucette.

Yes very sad news indeed. Lucette was one of those people whose fundamental grace and positivity just rubbed off on everyone around her. I am very thankful I had the chance to make a little music with her, and simply to have known her.

I'm shocked. I wasn't in contact with Lucette, but I thought her 'Golden Sun' and 'Radiant Stars' albums were unique and very accomplished works. Very poignant to read the words regarding her music and her illness.

Just randomly visited EM today and saw her picture and a date. Couldn't quite believe at first. I didn't know she was ill. Really great ambient composer, I liked her music since the first album I downloaded from EM few years ago, I think. Blissful, light ambient.

I wanted to thank everyone for your kind and generous thoughts regarding my wife, Lucette Bourdin, and her music. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2003 but due to the type of cancer she had it was manageable and she was not in any pain or discomfort (or at least not very much or very often). However, about a month and half ago it began to escalate and quickly moved beyond any of the treatments that the oncologists had planned. We did not mention it to anyone because at first we thought it was going to be taken care of, however, this proved not to be the case. By the time we realize the direction it was moving we were too busy to pass information along. At least she went fairly fast and with little suffering.

I also wanted to share with you that the whole reason she got into playing music was because of the cancer. It was something she'd always wanted to do and when she realized her time might be short she started buying gear (and I think some of you can understand  where that might go!) and twisting knobs. She was never angry or upset that she had cancer because it put her in a position to really think about what she wanted to do and that, she found, was to play music. She had no musical background so she played music like she painted: adding and subtracting sounds or colors until the music or art incarnated into form. I'm not saying she was perfect but I think she did pretty well being self-taught and carefully listening to many of you who were here before her.

We will certainly miss her and her creative spirit.

There are three tribute shows to her music coming up on stillstream.com:
1. Kite radio this Tuesday, the 22nd, with Stephan Philips at 9 PM central standard time
2. Free Floating with Brad Ross-MacLeod 08:00 PM CST (UTC-6) on Wednesday, the 23rd
3. February 26, 2011 07:00 PM CST (UTC-6)
Tune in for a special edition of Zen Caffeine: "Radiant Lucette: A Sonic Tribute." We'll be remembering Lucette Bourdin with an uninterrupted five-hour program of her timeless music. Please join us as we honor our friend and the serene creations that were her gift to us all.

Again, thank you everyone for your support of Lucette and her music over the last several years. It meant a lot to her to know  that her music had a positive effect on those who listened to it.

Blessings,
Michael (a.k.a. TestZero)

I'm also very sorry to hear this, and send my condolences, too.  I had heard one or two of her Earth Mantra releases, and enjoyed them.  I also remember enjoying her very striking artwork on her website.
