In all honesty, if the solar storms are bad enough to fry electronic equipment, the first to die will be the big computers that manage the electrical grid. With any luck the power will go down around the world long before our home systems get zapped.
... And I actually had a computer that fell victim to Y2K. It was a very nice desktop computer, an AT&T Unix PC
. It ran a very nice variation of UNIX System V R-2, with an interesting alpha-graphic windowing environment. UNIX survived Y2K just fine, but the calendar on the windowing system clicked over from 1999 to 19100.
