Need help IDing two space music tracks from early 90s(?)
« on: September 26, 2011, 02:58:34 PM »
Here are a couple tunes I taped off of either the radio shows Hearts of Space or Musical Starstreams. They sound like the space music from someone like Steve Roach/Micheal Stearns/Robert Rich/etc. This is from a tape from probably '94 or '95. These are just drop dead gorgeous spacious tracks, but I haven't been able to find them, despite all the space music CDs I buy from that era. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

I can't be sure but each of those COULD be from either Desert Solitaire OR Western Spaces, both of them collaborations between Roach and artists like Stearns, Kevin Braheny, and Richard Burmer. If I can find my Western Spaces cassette and Desert Solitaire CD, I will see if they match up. It sure does sound like a collaboration between Roach and Stearns, though.
May the odds be ever in your favor.

If you could confirm that, I would be very grateful. I will see if I can preview some tracks from the CD you mentioned to see if they match. Thanks for the heads up!

I'm pretty sure the 2nd track is neither Desert Solitaire nor Western Spaces.  Not absolutely sure about the 1st track, but leaning toward it's neither of those albums either, and I've listened to both of them a lot over the years.

Maybe try one of Steve Roach's Lost Pieces albums?  It feels like that to me, especially #2.

Well, I know they are not on Lost Pieces 1 or 4. I'm not one-hundred percent sure about 2 or 3, but I don't believe they are on those either because those came out long after I had recorded this music on the radio. I listened to some samples from Desert Solitaire and Western Spaces too, but I didn't hear them there either. They really sound like Steve Roach pieces, like you said, especially that second track. This is killing me, i have been sifting through a lot of Roach's music but I haven't heard these tunes, although I have heard tunes a lot like these. If anyone reading this knows a bigtime Steve Roach fan could you have them give these tunes a listen, I would be very grateful!!

This is a tough one. I've been digging through my Steve Roach and haven't found it yet, either. It's definitely not from Desert Solitaire or Western Spaces, which was my first guess as well. Tried Lost Pieces, as well as Kiva, Soma & Strata(with Robert Rich), World's Edge, Origins, Artifacts, and the other Australian collaborations.  What I have discovered during this search is that I have way too many Steve Roach albums.

Yeah, I have tried maybe 20 Roach albums they could be on and haven't heard any matches. The man is amazingly prolific, and he isn't the kind of music artist you want to have to find an obscure release within his body of work. Although in my search I have found a few gems which I overlooked before, so there is an upside. Thanks for trying to look though, I appreciate it!.

It is indeed. Good catch. Back to sleuthing for the 2nd track.

BINGO! Thank you very much Phobos!!! Purchasing that track as we speak!!! Very much appreciated!!! At last after all these years!! Looking more into it, this tune first appeared on an obscure European release of Roach's Stormwarning from a label called Lektronic Soundscapes, and the track was played on the radio in the US but not released in the US- which was how I got it in tape long before any US release. Silly me, I was only looking on US releases previous to and around the year I recorded it!

The good thing is I wasn't even sure that one was a Steve Roach tune, but the other track I am sure is, its sound is too distinguishably Roach's.

Again, thanks Phobos for the ID, and thanks to everyone reading who has given these tunes a try.

The 2nd piece is Steve Roach's "The Unbroken Promise" originally released on a 1993 artist compilation, "The Promises of Silence" on Projekt. It is available on "Truth and Beauty: Lost Pieces Volume 2" along with "Aftermath".

You're quite welcome shadyj. How nice that both of these gorgeous tracks ended up on a collection that will soon be in your hands!
Peace, Kirk

How did I miss that? I should have let the CD play through instead of turnng it off after the first track, not thinking the other track would be on the same cd. ;)
