Nice one.
Instead of PNRGs from the CD players one could use attractor functions. A friend of mine just tried out some on one of his software synths and it sounded amazing (he was controlling the index of a granular synth module). Attractors usually are more pattern-like, but with random deviations.

Hi Tobias,

I'm afraid you've lost me a bit on the 'attractor functions' . I liked this for the physicality of having the 4 discs spinning - a bit like the original tape loops.

That  "special moment" Slick describes is similar to something I experienced when I went to an Eno installation about 10 years ago that had 8-10 CD boomboxes mounted to a wall playing random tracks.  Visually it wasn't that interesting, but I really enjoyed what I heard the first time I visited.  When I came back a week or so later, the randomized tracks sounded completely different to me, and the moment I had experienced before seemed lost.

Funny that this thread came up because just this past weekend I played Jonathan Hughes' "Fluidities" all over the house.  It was playing on random in 4 different rooms simultaneously.  It was neat to walk from one room to the next & have to music be different but the same.  Very cool.
