Drone On's review of "Out of the Way" limited CDR by Aglaia
« on: April 11, 2012, 12:48:07 PM »
Available via aliodie.com, "Out of the Way" is a limited edition of 99 copies release in handmade digipak.  This package is a true work of art--a colored, textured paper-mache type 6-panel digipak with cover art insert attached on front and back, tray artwork, with black CDR signed on the silver-label side by Gino Fioravanti.  (For those who just want the music, it is also available on iTunes as a download).  Of the many Aglaia projects released over the years, the music here is some of Aglaia's strongest to date, reminding me of my favorite of Gino's which is "Reverberant Skies."  Like that album, "Out of the Way" pieces are incredibly tranquil, with drones that hover gently and soothe like a soft rain.  Pieces like "Northern Lights" and "Amaranthine Days" fall into this category.  "Night Glow" goes into darker, more surreal territory with a haunting theme overlaying the ambience.  Some of Aglaia's past albums, like "White Maps" and "Naked Movements," were quite a bit more experimental and challenging.  If you want a classically-ambient experience in the vein of Brian Eno, mixed with today's best drone artists like Alio Die and Oophoi, you can't go wrong with this very strong release!

I agree.  It's a very pleasant album, and the packaging is nice, too.  One strange thing I noticed about it is that the paper-mache rests on top of what used to be digipacks for Alio Die's "Tripudium Naturae" CD.  Very clever.  I also came across what sounds like an interesting lengthy slab (over 4 hours' worth of  in MP3 format) of Fioravanti/Toso (the two behind Agliaia) on Amazon under the unlikely title, "5 hours tibetan and oriental music."  "5 hours" sounds a bit more new-agey, though there's plenty to like here, too, and for very cheap.

thanks for the tip, Forrest!

i own this hidden CD by Aglaia under the name 'La Musica E La Mudra' (=Aglaia: http://www.amazon.com/Momenti-Per-Larmonia-Musica-Serenita/dp/B001NA9VEW/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1334728380&sr=8-8) by several years.
it's been released on CD as well, though i can't find it: http://www.discogs.com/Momenti-Per-LArmonia-La-Musica-E-Le-Mudra-I-Gesti-Delle-Mani-Per-La-Serenit%C3%A0/release/1255730
i thinks it's a beauty and sounds like an worthy alternate version of 'Mondi Sensibili'. Only the mastering job here is done pretty bad..

i will definitely check out their other so-called new-agey therapeutic stuff on Amazon.
