10 from John @ Echoes
« on: May 11, 2012, 11:30:24 AM »
John Diliberto (Echoes) posted these to the Hyperreal group recently.
They are "some thoughts about electronic music".
I kinda liked them, and agree ... except perhaps with the last one.  ;)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Hitting the laptop space bar for play is not a live performance.

2. If youíre going for a cheesy sound, you canít go wrong with saxophone or trumpet patches.

3. Before you create that loop, just consider:  How many drone zone CDs do you think anybody really needs?

4. If you arenít a very good keyboard player, playing a piano or piano patch will only highlight your deficiencies.

5. Does a remix mean you always have to put a thudding dance beat on it?

6. A sample of a complete musical phrase is not your creation.

7. Unless youíre doing something really interesting on top, the same rhythm for 30 minutes is not trance-inducing.  Itís just boring.

8. You can modulate the key signature.

9. Itís okay to have some stage presence.

10. There is electronic music after 1978.

#3 answer: Infinite.  One can never have too many drone-zone CD's.  ;D

Agree with them all except #10 as Im not sure what he means  ???

#6 is a stand out for me and is so prevalent in the ready made music world we can choice to live in and many do.

Thanks APK for putting this up.

I think that's intended as a little dig at the Berlin School of EM, though just a guess.

Of course, its easy for music journalists who aren't musicians themselves to critique others who are.   I could add to the list, "Lisa Gerrard is not an electronic/ambient musician." Nevertheless, an entertaining list...

Pretty relevant but fairly obvious points mostly.
By the same token, are musicians also allowed to be critical of a DJ's / critics musical taste as well ? :)

That's why I made the crack about Lisa Gerrard.  Diliberto used to write for Tower Pulse as a reviewer of ambient/electronic, and every issue all he talked about was Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance (I love her voice, but...).  What does Lisa play? Finger cymbals and yang chin.  Hardly an electronic musician.  ;D

But not all ambient is electronic.  I play a number of "real" instruments; does that mean I'm only ambient when I pull out my synths?  I think that David Hykes or Stuart Dempster might beg to differ.

You have a point, but I think most people would put Lisa Gerrard's solo music in the "world" or "modern classical" category and not ambient/electronic.
