What was the most important band of your college years?
« on: August 20, 2012, 09:33:28 PM »
I saw this thread at NPR Music & thought we could give it a go here.

Right off the bat I'm going to cheat & say three bands were a big part of my college life...

1. Ultravox
2. Snopek
3. The Police

University of Wisconsin - Madison '78 to '83.

Snopek was a local band that I saw at least a hundred times.  Even though nobody else knows them or cares I had to put them in here.

The Police were ever present during my college years.  They played a small club across the street from my dorm in the spring of '79.  They had to play Roxanne twice because they didn't have enough material for an encore.

But I'd say the first band that comes to mind when I think of college is Ultravox. I remember falling in love with new wave synth & playing the crap out of "Vienna".  We played "Sleepwalk" & "All Stood Still" at every party we had and if you stood in the middle of the living room during those songs, you didn't need to dance because the floor shook & waved & bounced so much.  I still make party mixes but I miss the dancing.

College years: 90-94

1. Ride
2. Current 93
3. This Mortal Coil

It is kind of hard to pin point specific bands, but there were certain genres and groups of artists that were influential for various reasons. Ride represents for me the appeal of the shoegazing era, and is one of several bands I adored (including Lush, Slowdive, MBV, and others).

Current 93 is representative of some of the industrial/experimental stuff I liked (e.g., Nurse with Wound, Psychic TV, Hafler Trio, Organum) that eventually got me into ambient music. I eventually discovered--after listening to a lot of tiring artists banging on pipes and cans and looping those sounds over and over--that what I really liked was drone-based compositions that had ethereal rather than noisy qualities. It was a small, but significant step, to discover Eno, Fripp, Roach, and others after college and to make the bridge to what is more commonly discussed on these forums.

This Mortal Coil in some ways represents everything I loved about 4AD in the 80's and early 90's.

Chris, you have the This Mortal Coil remastered reissues including Dust and Guitars?  If not, recommend these highly!

College years 1983-89

1. New Order
2. Japan
3. Duran Duran

Bauhaus, The Cure and Killing Joke almost make the list. All these bands were extremely important to me throughout college and each ranked as "super #1 favorite obsession" for at least a while.

I'd have to say my college years in England were primarily full of

- the british folk scene in general (Fairport Convention, John Martyn, Steeleye Span, etc.): I went to a LOT of concerts.
- Soft Machine
- Early Eno  (Another Green World)
- Leonard Cohen
- Van Morrison

Does anybody dislike Skrillex as much as I do?
Ambient isn't just for technicians!

2. Snopek

Dave,

Believe it or not, I used to own two SIgmund Snopek III albums in the 70s.  I think the first one was my favorite of the two, but the title of it slips my mind.

Oregon
Earthworks
Allan Holdsworth
I was heavily into anything Oregon-related in the late 70s-early 80s.  I was fortunate to have seen them perform several times, including twice when Colin Walcott was still alive.  I also have a vivid memory of seeing Ralph Towner and John Abercrombie perform together at UCLA as part of an ECM tour.  I saw Codona (Colin Walcott/Don Cherry/Nana Vasconcelos) perform at McCabe's Guitar Shop in the late 70s.  Those were very special times.

Probably the three bands that influenced me the most during that era were:
Oregon
Henry Cow
National Health (and related Canterbury bands)

I can understand Forrest's above comments

After leaving England and while at art college in Canada I was for many years
totally hooked on the ECM gang of Towner, Abercrombie, Weber, and Garbarek.
Seen them a few times, including Toronto, and going to New York just to see them all on one bill.
Long time ago now, but that music was magical when I first heard it, especially Towner.
(I used to exclusively play guitar back then).

Pink Floyd
Led Zepplin
Rush
Motorhead
UFO ( with Michael Schenker in the line up)

My college years were in my thirties, but the bands I was into when I 'should' have gone to Uni were:

Soft Cell
Killing Joke
Sisters of Mercy

Prior to that Heavy rock pretty much predominantly. David, I saw UFO at Boro Town Hall without Schenker - bit of a disappointment !

I was at that gig as well, it was a big disappointment, Paul Chapman was playing guitar for them then, what a tosser!
Didn't bother with UFO after that.

My college "years" didn't quite make it to 2, partly because I spent so much time listening to (and living vicariously through) The Doors, Cream, and The Mothers of Invention.
