RIP Pete Namlook

I was very surprised this morning to see the announcement of the passing of Peter Kuhlmann AKA Pete Namlook, best known as the founder of the FAX label.

Just found out about this. Stunned, shocked, dispirited...godDAMN. One of the giants in our field is gone. Further words elude me.

Likewise, not sure what to say. Namlook is one of the few figures of the ambient music world I've never met or talked to or at least emailed, yet I don't underestimate his impact and influence, which were matched by few.

Found this link to a blog post by Phonaut - interesting summary of Namlook's impact and discography. Those of us who were following the ambient scene from the 90s will already know a lot of what's contained here, but still interesting

Well my jaw is on the floor...I cannot believe this, I don't want to believe it...

To me this man was a musical genius, visionary, innovator, an electronic music GOD.

I am stunned.

I will return to this thread and write more later.   :'(

Stunned at this news. Can't believe he was only 51. I have to admit, I came to Faxlabel ambient rather late. I discovered it through a Shoutcast server in '98 called J's Ambient, that played an incredible variety of ambient music, much of it from Pete's Faxlabel stuff, and became a collector of all I could find. Not an easy task because of Pete's policy of limited releases, but it was fun to meet other Faxheads and collectors through the 'net.  Dave at Ear Rational has been a tireless champion of Fax titles here in the States.

Namlook's huge output showed how much variety was possible in the ambient genre, and even if it wasn't always successful, it was great to see(and hear) boundaries being broken down and know that ambient couldn't just be pigeon-holed into shoe-gaze droning.

RIP, Pete. And thanks for all the music. At least that will live on.
I'm not dead yet.

Though I'm still reeling from this news, I've decided to share a few small insights.

I was a relatively early collector & follower of FAX/Namlook (around mid 90s) and can say that I have at least 95% of the catalog, other than a few original editions that were missed (mostly because of the lack of distribution here in the US for the label).

Of course, trying to procure original releases of, say, "Air I" or "Shades of Orion I" has only been possible if you wanted to make a car payment to obtain them (and all those dealers's sense of economic logic is woefully misplaced), and, I hate to say, now that Pete is gone many of those original versions will only be affordable if you already own real estate in Dubai.

I had some general (if light) correspondence with Pete during the publication years (90s-00s) of my magazines "i/e" & "e/i", and although I was never able to get to know him that well, he was generous, forthcoming with information, fiercely focused, and always willing to spread his own unique idiom of electronic music.

So, like most musicians/artists, ultimately history has the work to savor, enjoy, critique, dissect, etc. Thankfully his legacy arose during a time when hard media was in its heyday and the physical artifacts holding his sounds can continue to be relished.

Naturally this does little in the way of amending this ineffably sad news, but my duo, Groupthink, performing tonight in New York City, is dedicating its set in honor & to the wondrous memory of Mr. N.

Onward...

Well said, although I am less sad about the collector editions than the future masterpieces that could have been, and of course for his daughter Fabia (who helped with the website, www.namlook.de, and his spouse and other child (who I think is only a couple years old now), and other immediate family members left behind.  I wonder how the legacy will be carried on business-wise once the family is ready to tackle that, if at all.  Still reeling from the shock...

It is sad. For those interested in music on the FAX label, a lot of it is available for download at emusic.com.
Never regret money spent on old books, old dogs or old friends.

Sad news indeed.

Without doubt, he was one of the maestri of electronic/ambient music. I have to say I love his music very much and have been enormously influenced by it. On the other hand, I've been encouraged by his success as an independent musician and a producer. I feel I've lost a pillar of support…

Thank you so much, Pete.
RIP

So young! While his body of work is immense - he clearly had much more to offer. RIP

Just read this. Complete surprise, beyond words. I was a big collector from the early days of 1993 until about 2000.Have well over 100,many of those first editions such as Air 1 or Broadway series. I never was interested in selling them though I had offers. This was my introduction in some ways to the new school of ambient. I already had Eno and Budd and so on but something about the early 90s was exciting. With FSOL,Orb,IDM,etc... His catalogue, packaging, limited editions, solo and partnerships, and independent artists, all on FAX.It was not always brilliant music but it was different.
I am very saddened by this and have to say,I feel that much older and I will miss his shining spirit.

Further, there is a great 2 part interview each 10 minutes on You Tube about Peter.
Key in Pete Namlook's slice. Got it through Pitchfork.
We will miss you.
