Re: Dropbox is not fantastic

I've been using dropbox for a month now and I have to say its name is pretty apt. Every time I put more the one file in my drop box folder, when I open the folder on another computer its missing files. Something like 1/4th of the files are missing or have been dropped. Right now I'm working with a composer, I told him I would do some ruff mixes this weekend from home. So I dropped the session files into dropbox, when I get home I'm missing some key files so I won't be able to deliver the CD with the ruff mixes on monday as promised. The real madding thing is you can't tell on the host computer what is missing and what is not as it shows everything is there.  >:(
Take care.

Loren, that sounds really strange.  I know Dropbox has millions of users and I've heard many, many testimonials from people who find it works flawlessly.

The only time I've ever encountered a problem like what you describe is if I've added a large item to my Dropbox folder and then shutdown the computer before the file(s) finished synchronizing with the Dropbox server.  In that case, I checked another computer and was surprised to find the files didn't come through, though of course they came through later, after I turned the first computer back on again and the files uploaded.

Are you sure it's not something like that?  Also, if you log into your dropbox account via their website you can see an event log that shows files being uploaded, deleted, changed, synchronized and so on.  You should be able to see there at which stage something went wrong.  I've used this on maybe two dozen computer and an iPad and have never experienced the kind of problem you describe, except in the instance mentioned above, which was my own fault.  I now make sure I don't slam my laptop shut (which puts it to sleep) just after I've added large items to the Dropbox.

Yes I am sure. I left the computer on all weekend thinking it would take a while to upload all the files, it never did upload all of them. I've had this issue other times before. I got one of the dancers I work with frequently to join so I could send her four audio files that she needed. We talked on the phone while the files uploaded. I think two of them uploaded right away while the other two never did. I had to remove them from the dropbox folder and then put them back in again before they would show on her end.  I tried looking at the event log, but their were so many files its hard to tell what didn't make it, 30 tracks of audio with multiple takes and edits. No laptop slamming here, my laptop was not involved with any of these issues.
Take care.

Sorry about the trouble, Loren.  I feel semi-responsible because I recommended it to you, but one thing I'd say is that what you're experiencing is definitely not normal behavior for Dropbox.  If you can check the event log for your account on the Dropbox web site, one of the times when this happens, maybe you can determine what's up and get some help from them.  Also I believe they have user forums where maybe you can find some ideas.  Sorry I can't offer more help but I've never heard of anything like this, and have experienced no mysterious problems like this myself.  I'm as happy with Dropbox as I could possibly be, and have referred a dozen other users.

Mike - hey, did I read somewhere that you can share a folder or a file without the user having to join dropbox?  Or does everyone you share with have to have an account?

Just curious if I missed something - I could only seem to get it so people joined when I shared a folder.

LOL!   cancel my question - I literally just got an email from someone linking me directly to a dropbox file without the need to log in.

Oh my the timing...

Man, I've signed so many people up (not just through the link here) that I now have 5.5gb storage on my account.  I think Dropbox is more magical than a glittery unicorn.

On Wipeout last night they were throwing stuffed animals at the contestants and the host notes a unicorn being thrown...  "you can't throw a unicorn - that's just wrong to through endangered species"...

Doesn't he mean imaginary endangered species or am I missing some recent discovery?  ???

As for dropbox, I'm giving it another go right now. Sent one large file to Mike and another large file to another person. We'll see how it goes from here.
Take care.

Wow - I put "through" instead of "throw"!   Ouch.

yeah - that was what was so funny - that it was an endangered species rather than a mythical fantasy species!
