Terje Rypdal Odyssey box set on ECM
« on: January 19, 2013, 10:40:09 AM »
Reviews seem very mixed on Amazon of the original Odyssey album.  After the Rain is my fave of his.  Is music on this box similar in style?

Been a while since I've listened to this, but I remember it being more rock-oriented and a little dissonant, like late Miles.   It's not as spacey as his "When I Seem To Be Far Away" release which has mellotron.

I'm biased when it comes to Rypdal myself, as I love (& own all of) his work. Seeing him perform live in NYC last year was a great experience as well and even with obvious health problems hobbling him, he's still an amazingly adroit player.

The "Odyssey" box was a revelation to me, as it included the album in its entirety, as well as an unreleased live set from the era, which cooks. Yes, a bit on the heavier side, but still full of the trademark Rypdal sense of atmosphere, fluidity, and poise, and with a helluva band behind him. Essential, as far as I'm concerned.
