Rigel Orionis discussion
« on: May 05, 2008, 05:38:51 PM »
i guess i am a hypnos artist - hmm. i like the sound of that.
i have added some cool stuff to my arsenal of sound making devices.
i purchased a brass Tibetan bowl but can't figure out how to make it sing. it has a great gong sound, however, and i have used that extensively. stretching one of those tones out makes an awesome atmosphere.
i was searching for violin bows on ebay and found violins instead - cheaper! they were brand new, from china. the shipping is $50 but the violin was only $7! $52 for a violin is a good deal so wow! - i am taking violin lessons. i will also be using the bow on my acoustic guitar, dulcimer and lap harp. it makes some cool noises.
i have also added bamboo chimes, a bodhran, an irish whistle and a native American flute (very small) to my repoirtoire. i am making some cool stuff.

Jim,

There should be a small wooden beater that came with the bowl.  Rotate the beater around the edges of the bowl, as if you were playing a wine glass.

Have fun!

Friction is the key to the brass bowls. Often those beaters are a bit slick, you mau want to sand it down a bit with some fine grade sandpaper. My friend wraps his with some type of fabric and that apparently helps get the tone within a few rotations.

thanks mark. i have seen people using felt on the beaters. i was going to try that and/or a piece of terry cloth.

Hi Jim - I just took the quickest of looks and I was getting
blue links on the brown background which didn't make for a pleasant contrast.
I'd suggest trying another colour for your links (and "visited" links).

My two cents...

my webmaster is supposed to be fixing the "visited" links color to white.

Hi Jim - I like that white on the "visited links"
but it was actually the blue "unvisited links"
that I found awkward against the brown.
I just have to visit all your pages though
to turn them all white!  ;)

Hi Jim!

Cool, you have your very own website!  8)

Is "OpOp" your grandson?

(Hey, weren't you thinking about making "Meditate Your Ass Off" T-shirts awhile back)?  :)

Ohhh, I gotcha', (very cute, you & him "jamming" together).... :)

I was confused when I first tried to listen to those clips- I thought you were trying to have a practice session with someone, but your grandson kept coming in & interrupting!  :D

new stuff coming into the studio
« Reply #17 on: July 04, 2008, 02:54:33 PM »
i have been doing some ebay shopping this weekend and have some cool stuff coming my way:
1. a "traditional brass 7" chinese gong"
2. a blue lagoon didgeridoo
3. a fire sketch beeswax-bamboo didg
4. an 11x7 djembe
5. a monkey talking drum
6. a sioux native American flute

i am waiting on bids on a quartz crystal bowl, a frame drum and another talking drum. i am psyched for this stuff to get here!

(does anyone have any recommendations on the 'learn to play the didg' cd's or dvd'd?)
all the best and God bless

I've merged the 3 recent Rigel Orionis discussion topics (two of which had to do with new instruments, and one regarding the web site update).

Sorry if this mixes the various subjects up a little, but I've had to ask others in this section and the non-Hypnos artists/labels section, not to create new topics each time they have something new to announce about their work.  Just add to the old topic, unless there's news as significant as a new release.

OK, back to Rigel Orionis discussion!
