Loop-Based Music
« on: October 22, 2013, 03:44:51 AM »
Hi Hypnos!

Is this where to introduce myself?

I am "Big Looper", a loop-based musician from the U.S.A.

I love Hypnos releases, especially the classic ones, and am a big fan of ambient music in general.

I also create loop-based experimental ambient.

I would love to connect/converse with musicians here.

I have a link to share-- my Reverbnation page:
http://www.reverbnation.com/loop8274

Please feel free to connect with me here or there-- I am sure to reciprocate.

On my page is some of my music, and a video.

Right now, I focus on Z-F style "experimental" ambient, capturing the rapid pace of life today.

Thank you, hope you are all well!

I don't mean to be a jerk but I'm not a fan at all, and this is coming from somebody who likes Zoviet France and Rapoon a lot. You're leaning too close to your influences while at the same time lacking what made them great. I don't mean that to be insulting but I feel like it's foolish to try to outdo your favorite musicians at their own game. I think your music would be better with more juxtaposition and atmosphere.

But maybe I'm wrong. It appears that you're on a label, which means you're ahead of me. Maybe it's just me.

Hello Big Looper,

The pieces sounds a bit bare and raw, especially considering the brief duration of the samples you are using.  They might sound more finished if they were layered and processed, so that it would bring some other quality out of them beyond just the raw sound.

I would also spend a bit more time woodshedding with the sounds.  It would be time well spent; you wouldn't want to give listeners a negative or indifferent impression right off the bat.

Forrest

Thank you for the constructive feedback!

Certainly a raw sound was the aim, though I understand that is not for everyone, and it is good to hear different points of view.

I will take all of this into consideration.

I agree with Forrest's feedback. His advice is always great and very thoughtful, much more than mine was TBH. His advice that he gave me when I first started posting here was extremely helpful.

Also, raw isn't always the best thing, especially in ambient music. I know there are people that preach rawness in music but what should really matter is how the end product sounds. The best albums I find, especially in ambient music, do have polish.

I think these new tracks are a lot better. I enjoyed them.
