This is the skin I have been using the last 4 years.

Before that I used this skin for about the same time ironically cause of my anti-apple ideology.
But I did like the clean design, but I wanted a bigger spectrum analyzer that is why I am not using it anymore.

What this points out is that, regardless of the platform, there don't seem to be that many good choices out there.

In any media segment where there are several good, free options, there won't be much drive for competitors to develop something new, since they know they probably won't be able to charge (at least not much) for it.

It's like what has happened with web browsers, anti-malware tools and fonts. People are now accustomed to getting these things for free, so most potential new developers don't want to bother... they just work on something else.

I have always used itunes, since I obtained my first ipod in about 2007.

Once you get used to its idiosyncracies and issues it is very good I have found. I am happy enough with the sound quality and love the compatibility with all my ipods and the itunes store.

I have very briefly tried various other mediaplayers and found them to be complete and utter pants ;) so itunes it is for me.

I have recently tended to play a lot of music direct from the PC when working, browsing etc and have found it to be so convenient. Quite a good quality set of speakers/subwoofer (Cambridge audio) helps with that enjoyment. However................. Santa brought me a new pair of Mission speaker stands and speakers which I have direct wired from my main hifi into my adjacent office/lounge/man room and so it will now be mainly CDs/vinyl/and downloads through the main hifi  8)

Still like itunes though  :D

JRiver makes Media Center

I should mention that is is not free its $40 but it is one of the few full audiophile options that allows direct streaming to your converters and bypasses any processing and such which iTunes adds. I dont know the details of this, but it does sound better than iTunes and will play and tag both ALAC and FLAC if that is important to you.

I use to use ASIO on my mac back in the 90s. It was developed by Steinberg software for their products. But that was back in the OS9 and before days. With OSX you no longer need ASIO. I don't use Cubase anymore but I don't think Steinberg even offers ASIO anymore on the Mac since Core Audio does everything so much better. And yes it is way better then ASIO was when I used it.

I also use iTunes for the reasons given by many others. Most of my CD collection is in iTunes now.

Another alternative on the Mac is Amarra from Sonic Studios. They offer their own player but also a plugin for iTunes that is suppose to make iTunes sound better. It's also not free, it costs $50 for the plugin and a lot more for their player! You can find more info and a 15 day demo here:

Take care.

I should add, when I want to play back FLAC files, I usually use Vox. Sometimes VLC, if I'm just listening to short bits.

iTunes here...never explored other options as it came installed.  It did take a bit of work configuring itunes to store my files where I wanted them.  Mac apps love to do it their way.  Stopped using Aperture for this very reason and use Photoshop , Camera Raw and Bridge because it insists you do it your way. (so much better as well)  Drifting off topic sorry.

I did use Amarra which sort of worked on top of itunes to improve playback quality.....a go to audiophile server solutions.  Comes form one of the most highly regarded audio editing software companies for mastering engineers called Sonic Studio.  http://www.sonicstudio.com

I use iTunes - and I have a flac player but at the moment I can't think of what it is.  I don't use it very often as I'm usually listening on my ipod.

I use Audacity for FLAC files. Most of my Bandcamp purchases go through Audacity on their way to iTunes.
There is no spoon. Which sucks because I have a pudding cup.

My search for the best player continue..but it might have ended too... since last time I have spent time trying to find other media players.  I have compared many different soundplayers, I think it is really worth your time trying to find the best player cause I hear a distinctive difference between players..

For mac users the answer is more simple, Audirvana  seem to be the best player in terms of sound quality.

For windows I have tested many, AIMP3, Jriver, Xmplay, Bug Head Emperor, cplay,  and at last lilith.

of all players so far I have tried I like Lilith the most... it sound obviously more detailed then the other players I have tried.  The Lilith  player have good reputation in audiophile forums but  outside of of these forums the player is still very unkown the main reason for that is the player is not in enligsh..but once you have set it up..it does not matter..

This is the skin I use right now.
