Low Light Mixes
« on: June 06, 2008, 09:52:53 PM »
Rather than post a new topic every time I do a new mix, I figured I'll make one Low Light Mixes thread for all the new mixes.

So here is the new mix, A Ghost in the Phase.  It's the sequel to A Drift on the Signal.  Which basically means I had no new ideas so I just ripped off a previous theme.

This mix, like the first one, combines recordings of shortwave radio & ambient music with shortwave elements.  Somehow in the first mix I never included anything from Tetsu Inoue's World Receiver, but I've rectified that this time.  Don't forget you can get World Receiver from Infraction Records.  New music from Rameses III, Rod Modell and Sylvain Chauveau is in there along with Stephen Mathieu's Radioland because it's constructed from shortwave broadcasts.

enjoy

Nice job, Dave...d/l'ed yesterday & have had it playing on my desktop...quietly crunchy & glitchy.

And there's nothing wrong with a Part II. I have several mix series that go for 3 & 4 parts. In fact, I think it's challenging to make mixes that really play well together.

Here the latest mix from Low light Mixes...

It's an ambient trip down memory lane.  I have been listening to Steve Roach's Structures from Silence as sleep music lately.  It was great to hear that cd again, especially the title track.  So that made me pull out some more 'golden oldies', which lead to this mix...retroact 1.0.

All the music in this mix is at least 10 years old. Structures from Silence is from 1984! The Aphex Twin cut is from 1994. I cheated with a couple of tracks however, such as the Tollefson & Vidna/Pearce cuts, which are from 1999.

With new music coming out all the time & with my tastes changing over the years it's easy to forget what a great album Saul Stokes' Washed in Mercury is.  I'll have to pull out Zo Pilots & Outfolding too.   I am very happy to have worked in Thom Brennan's The Path Not Taken into the mix, one of my all-time favorite ambient tracks.

As I said over on my official blog post, this mix is not supposed to represent a certain time period or demonstrate evolving styles. It's just a bunch of older cuts that I sort of randomly pulled out & thought would work well together.

There is no clever theme to this new mix.  I noticed a similar feel to much of the new music I was listening to so I decided to cobble it together in a mix.

All of the music in this mix is new, either 2007 or 2008, except for the Andrew Deutsch cut which is from 2005(although it is new to me).

The music in this mix has a sort of subdued, orchestral fell to it. I started thinking about this mix listening to the new Deaf Center release.  Layers of strings create a beautiful, melancholy experience.  That pretty much describes the rest of the music in this mix.

Again, great mix Dave.  The memories of some of these tracks...  When I was in college during the late fall and winter I used to work midnights at a large retail store doing restocks (probably of cat food, cheez-its, deodorant, air filters, etc.)  It was usually just a handful of us, so I would take the in-store PA and place in front of a CD player.  SAW II was a popular choice.  By me that is.  No one else knew (or cared) what it was  ;D   Anyway, long story short - Rhubarb is one of those tracks that certainly has an indelible time and place in my mind.

Oh, I listened and tried to identify each track in this mix...I think I got a lowly 3 out of 12.

I managed to spot three in a row early on... These:

    * 01:00 Aphex Twin - rhubarb [1994]
    * 08:00 Steve Roach - Structures from Silence [1984]
    * 17:20 Biosphere - Chukhung [1997]

then a big fat zilch after that. Enjoyed the trainspotting along the way. Props to Mixmeister Michuda.

I'm listening to your 'suspended in air' mix at the moment and it's really helping me out... turn off the world and get something done for a change!

Will d/l these tonight. Thanks - the effort is very well appreciated and a great way to introduce new sounds.

Fresh from a vacation in Wisconsin's northwoods, comes the latest Low Light mix, clouds in my coffee.

I made this one for sitting around the cabin & drinking plenty of coffee on cool, misty mornings.  Because it's a morning mix it is a bit lighter, more airy than the stargazing mix that will be posted here soon.

This is a mix from our annual trip to the Wisconsin northwoods. As the title suggests it's a mix for star gazing.

As I have mentioned in other Hypnos posts, we sit out at the end of the pier and watch for shooting stars and satellites with these mixes as the soundtrack.

I limited myself to fairly new music, stuff I have been listening to a lot lately. I knew I wanted to include new music from Area C - Sea of Rains. It was commissioned by the NASA RI Space Grant Consortium and the Museum of Natural History in Providence, RI as an original score for their "Mission Moon: past, present, future" exhibit at the Museum of Natural History. It has some Nasa recordings mixed in with the music so it was a natural for this mix.

After that, the other tracks are just tunes that flow well together.

Some great choices, Dave. I've been enjoying some of the albums these come from, incl. intriguing works by Kyle Bobby Dunn, The Caretaker, and Area C. That Kabana looks familiar ;)

BTW, the graphic for one of your previous Low Light Mixes (earlier in the thread) reminded me of an image from Keith Berry's The Ear that was Sold to a Fish: definitely a release amenable to excerpting something from for a future mix.

I've got a new mix up over at Low Light Mixes.

A friend of mine told me that he had downloaded some recordings of old 78rpm records from archive.org.  The thought of old, scratchy opera recordings was too much to resist.

So that's where this mix started.  I had intended it to be similar to my shortwave mixes but it didn't exactly end up that way.  Part of the reason is my own impatience, I wanted to get a new mix posted but didn't want to take weeks to sort through the tons of possibilities presented by archive.org & other sites.

I found that the perfect compliment to the old 78's is music from The Caretaker.  His music was inspired by the ballroom scene from "The Shining".  From the Caretaker website..."The first release played and extended this theme of altering 1920's and 1930's ballroom music creating an eerie and haunted soundworld. Subsequently the sound has become darker and often more abstract over time, moving away from the initial idea of a haunted ballroom into territories involving the mind and its abilities to recall memories.

The mix sort of veers away from the old & scratchy theme about two-thirds of the way through.  It just sort of morphed on it's own as I pulled tracks.  Mixes can be funny that way, developing their own path.

N O V E M B E R   B U D D H A

This mix is called November Buddha in honor of the new Buddha Machine 2.0 which was just released.  Mine is on it's way right now.  There's not much of a theme here, just a bunch of new tunes that I've been listening to lately.

The Lullaby League & Sleep Robot tracks are new discoveries thanks to the fantastic mixes from Alan(Undershadow).  I probably have listened to these mixes more than anything else this year.  Just an absolutely fabulous collection of guitar ambient.

Most of the artists in this mix can also be found in Alan's Axescapes mixes.  A couple exceptions are Eluder, which is a brand new Infraction release.  And Disturbed Earth, an excellent recording on Atmoworks.

Download :  153mb, 64 min.

Motion for Relief is the latest mix at Low Light Mixes.

I guess I am ripping of Undershadow again.

This new mix is a dubby, ambient affair.  Even though it's similar to Alan's mixes it only has one artist in common, Quantec.  This mix is not quite as beat driven, it's a bit more ambient.  I was glad to finally find a place for the Tiki Obmar track.

I am really enjoying playing this one fairly loud so that the dubby basslines reverberate all over the house.

Nice one, Dave. Well, if you're gonna rip me off <grin>, then I'll hitch a ride on your coat-tails, and throw out this link to a mix I've had up for a few months now. I hadn't posted it here because it's not especially ambient, though contains textures/atmospheres that might be appreciated by some ambienteers. Bass-ically, this is for anyone who wants to take Dave's reverberating room concept further and deeper to a floorboard-endangering level, whilst still having something musically involving to hang on to.

Link here: http://albient.livejournal.com/4702.html

You can stream or download the mix. Here's the tracklisting:

A first for Low Light Mixes...a Holiday mix.

Last year I downloaded a very cool holiday compilation.  It's called "That Fuzzy Feeling".  It looks like they still have downloads available but are sold out of the cd's.  You can have find it here...
http://lorecordings.greedbag.com/buy/that-fuzzy-feeling-0/?tab=description

That release was the starting point for this mix, called A Northern Holiday.  There are three cuts from the compilation in the mix....Brave the Cold by Vincent Oliver and Isan...Family, Giving by Peter Broderick...Snowstorm in a Snow Globe by Fuzzy Lights.  From there I just looked for other tunes that fit the theme.

So grab some hot coco & trim the tree with some ambient-ish goodness playing in the background.

Happy Holidays.
