Any one can become an ambient artists despite budget, gear or invested money. But I think there is no coincidence
that most of the ambient artists I personally like use Lexicon and Eventide gear, I guess it simply about preference what sound you prefer.  You seem to have that opinion that not every one can be an ambient artist or audio sculptor ? That is kind of patronizing opinion  in that case nothing I stand by since I think everyone can be an artist or musician according to his her owns ability.

I can only talk for myself personally, but I have been on the quest of getting the sound
I am looking after. I have gone thru different milestones,  when I got my Lexicon reverb a new universe did open up for sure, and I was unable to live without it honestly, using other things seemed like going a step back, when you reach that next level it is very hard to go back...
When I got it made me a lot easier to get the sound I wanted, and I could easily identify the "lexicon" character which I heard in steve roach albums for instance. I can only talk for me personally again but for me the eventide is one more milestone for me on my personal path to reach my musicial vision, with this unit I think most bits will fall to place from what I have been missing, I want personally for my personal stimulation have something that makes myself stimulated , I have come close with multiple plugins but the eventide effects is just for me hands down a big step up in all regards...and with that self regarding getting stimulated, this is a process also, it gets harder and harder to get stimulated you always strive for better and better sound, the solution for me was the Eventide, and I knew this already 2007 but it was not to 2013 I actually bought it.
I am happy for myself I did decided to invest this money...I will not regret it I have the feeling it might be my best buy since it will help me with all kinds of sound processing and just making music more "fun" in general to do with a better satisfaction experience.

I am just like you who is in the process of building a studio step by step. I have a lot of material in demo level that I want to record, now with My eventide I can get the exact guitar sound I want so it helps me a lot.
In the coming 6 months I will mostly work, I have two jobs a full time day job but I also work at night some days so some days I will work double which I guess is quite inhumane, all to save up for new gear.  There is still a few more things I need, I do not have microphones yet, I want also a microphone do record my own field recordings, a new pre amp, a di box, a bass guitar to record bass to my tracks, a new 6 string guitar since I only have a 7 string (28.5  inch) which limit me to make certain type of music.

and a lot of more, but the important part is that I keep on writing a lot more demos, I have no real stress since my only vision is to get it as perfect as I can.  I have a few "big"  "life projects" I aim to do which I have had in my head for many years..   ambient is only one of my interest, I like extreme metal and a lot of other music..

If you send me a PM I can send you an ambient recording or a few if you are interested.

Also with that said even if I would had record multiple albums it is not likely I would even tell you since I Want to keep some things confidential as you might understand.  Many of my favourite bands are of "unknown" identity for some of my projects I prefer this approach since it does takes away the focus from all non relevant also takes away some distracting elements for an artists.  I do music all for myself, all I can say I am eager now when I got more tools to use to finally try to record all my demo material I have saved up for so many years.  My ambient music feels not so private so  I have no problem to share publicly.
