DACs
« on: May 25, 2014, 03:11:10 PM »
Hi,

I need some advice regarding DACs.

The main purpose is listening to FLACs on my working pc. I'm purchasing a pair of Adams A77X for this.

So my options so far are:

Dangerous Music Source

Benchmark DAC1

SPL Crimson

Grace 902

Let me know what you think.

Cheers

I think it will be a big step forward compared with my jurassic audio setup...

It's not high end, but for the purpose it's ok.

I finally got it, it has an amazing clarity!

For now I connected it to a pair of Van Damme XLR cables to the Neumann KH120. My girlfriend thought that I was using a 5.1 audio system, because the separation, stereo image and clarity revealed a load of layers, that was lost in my old system.

I'm still pondering if I buy the Adams A77x or something else, tho..

it pretty much sums up mu impression with the Source as well.. but as all the things in the world all is relative and after I tried The Antelope Eclipse DAC I did experience similar "bump" in clarity and quality. But not really fair to compare because the price. I am really interested to try the Avocet.. I guess if you have that one you have probably the best "reference" DAC...that is trusted by a lot of people in the studio world..  I bought my Eclipse mainly cause I got a 40% discount  it also is an AD/DA converter which made it possible for me to sell my Lynx Aurora to replace with the Eclipse so yeah including the discount and that I could sell the source and the aurora it was a really good deal for me..

And those meters is easy to get used to..now I do not want to be without it for sure..and the headphone amp is really good.. but as I have said earlier I would never have bought it if it wasn't for the 1 week special black friday discount.
The full price is simply to insane..  I would had perhaps got the Antelope orion and the Avocet then instead.

I'm still not in that 1% of audio engineers that can spot the difference by hearing for ex your Eclipse or a Prism Sound Atlas. And I really doubt I could spot the difference between the Source and higher stuff.

That requires a lot of training or maybe natural talent? So yes, in this price tag the Source is really cool!
