Aphex Twin
« on: August 16, 2014, 09:58:52 AM »
I came across this article today about what sounds like an Aphex Twin publicity stunt.
http://pitchfork.com/news/56339-an-aphex-twin-is-blimp-flying-over-london/

I'm cautiously optimistic for something like Drukqs. Any Aphex Twin fans here?

It would be nice to hear some new material from Mr. Richard James. I hadn't realized how long it's been since his last release, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

I suppose it's a sign of the times now that Aphex Twin now shows up as the background music in many commercials these days. "Shiny Metal Rods" as the backdrop of an insurance ad is an evolution of some sort.  :)
There is no spoon. Which sucks because I have a pudding cup.

I've been getting all excited since the announcement, until I remembered that I didn't particularly love Drukqs. I mean, it was a decent enough album, but not that kind of thing to make me line up at midnight outside the record store the night before release day to make sure I get a copy, you know?

It's just good to know that he's going to get back to releasing music again.

So, what do folk here make of his new album, 'Syro'?

I seem to really love it one day, and then find it boring and irritating the next.

Lots of old school vintage sounds on this one, for sure... Much like his last Analord and Tuss releases.

It seems from interviews there are other 'more experimental' releases lined up, and he defined this as his 'pop album' - so I look forward to hearing those (if they actually materialise!)

It's great to have new Aphex material whatever the case. :-)

Drukqs did not do much for either.

I do like the analog sounds in Syro but the tracks I have heard seem too cluttered and is the irritating part for me.  Could be the desired effect though.  I still may get it.

For me, anything from Aphex Twin requires time and multiple plays to enjoy and appreciate.
Is Syro mind-blowing? No. But then, after such a huge period of silence from him, expectations can get to ridiculous heights.

I hope he starts releasing again on a regular basis. An album every year or two would be nice to see.
