Ambiloop
« on: July 02, 2008, 10:36:52 AM »
Are there any Ambiloop users here? I did a search but couldn't find any reference.

This is one of the best pieces of software out there and the new version (1.70) throws an incredible new set of tools into the mix.

And it's free! ...for quite possibly the most powerful looping tool out there.

I remember using it for a while a year or two ago when I was interested in looping.
It behaved itself and was straightforward/simple and useful.
Will have a look at the latest version.

I've been waiting for the software version of the Electrix hardware looper (Repeater).
But it seems to be on infinite hold :)

Another good piece of looper software, now out on Windows, is Augustus Loop.
I've used it a fair bit recently.

That's very interesting about Augustus Loop, I actually bought a Mac license for it a while ago when I got carried away and didn't check the website properly. Great to see it on Windows at last.

Tbh though, my favourite looping tool is still the Line 6 POD delay whacked up to infinite delay - it just seems to have a unique character!

"Infinite delay?"  How do you ever hear what you played if the loop is infinitely long?

;)

Welcome to the forum, by the way!

Ok - I'm stumped - I'd really like to poke fun at the infinite delay joke - but I can't.   Nice job, Mr. Griffin.

I was thinking these looping apps looked pretty cool, then I realized I own Ableton Live so I can pretty much loop as much as I want, already.

Ambiloop is good for recording & playing multiple loops.
Live is good for playing/triggering loops, but is it good for recording them ?

Yeah, as I understand it Ableton doesn't really enable you to continually overdub (which is where the 'infinite' aspect comes into it - although it probably is the wrong term!) - I haven't really spent a great deal of time playing with Ableton, but I think it only really does 'one pass' looping. I really like just sitting down with a guitar or mic and building up a tune out of one loop that you can keep adding to - and for this ambiloop is great.

...Probably almost too great, giving you 8 of them to play with - which is why I love my POD so much. 1 loop. That means you got to get it right.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the guy behind Ambiloop records as Telomere (Christopher Macdonald), though I could be wrong.

Yes, it's definitely Chris, i'll have to hunt down some of his music - he's very humble and doesn't mention it!

So does Ableton have a continual overdub function? I have tried looking on the demo but could never see one.

Oh and hi Martin! :)

Yes, Chris is behind Ambiloop.  As to him being humble...damn right- he's one of the nicest most humble guys I've ever corresponded with.  I'm doing a collaboration with him actually-  very excited to be doing that- we hope to do an album together, probably by the end of this decade. :)

This may not mean a lot to some people here, but Chris also works at Blizzard (as in World of Warcraft).  This completely blew my mind-  Blizzard are the most succesful games company on this planet, and he's one of their coders.  He's such a quiet achiever, that one.  If anyone here hasn't listened to his music, under the name Telomere, then you must go, nay, run! out and buy one of his albums.  His new album "The Stellar Sea" is just unbelievable.  His other two albums "Zoetosis" and "Astral Currents" are also sublime.  But you'll never catch him posting about himself, because he's so quiet about his achievements.

....unlike that Oenyaw guy.  Jeez, he never shuts up. ;)

Haha.   ;D

I mentioned Oenyaw because he's very similar to Chris.  He's also one of those quiet achievers.  I've noticed him lurking around these forums, hence the joke.  If anyone here hasn't checked out his work, do so now- He writes massive ambient pieces, clocking in at several hours long at times.  His tracks are as long as most people's albums, and some of them are ravishingly beautiful.

I'm only poking fun at Oenyaw (and he knows it).   Wayne sent me a dvd of like 30 hours worth of his music... some of it is quite brilliant.   Some tracks aren't as exciting to me, but that describes my feelings on most artists I like.   :)

RAVISHINGLY BEAUTIFUL!!!  That's me.

I'm also at Walmart and Amazon, but don't ask me how.  Those CDBaby guys.  What the heck, I made $27 last year alone!

On with the topic...Ambiloop.  Isn't it "The Loop" which made discrete music possible?    You know, start a loop, walk the dog, turn a knob, pour a glass of wine, turn another knob, start diner, flick a switch, put the clothes in the washer, and the track is done.  Chop it up, animate the send effects on Cubase, make it go from left to thgir and voila...Ambient music!

I actually do a bit more work then that, but you know, I gotta retain my position as an quiet achiever.

(This made for a happy ending to a really shitty day.  Thanks, guys!)

There is an overdub button on the toolbar/transport bar in Ableton Live. I've never mucked with it but it is there. Check the manual to see if it goes into any detail on its use.

The author of Ambiloop deserves an award of some kind for making such a good program that's only 400KB! I like the realtime filters, lfo and effects too, can't beat the price! I like building up a layered loop on my POD then record that into Ambiloop and start another, and another, etc.
