Lo-Fi Ambient Recommendations
« on: January 06, 2017, 04:52:56 PM »
Greetings Ambient peoples.  I was wondering if you have any recommendations for Lo-Fi Ambient.  LFA in this context means Ambient music that features soft noise beds, clicks, pops, ambiguous percussive noises, etc.  It could also mean low bit depth resolution as long as it isn't too harsh.  Granular synthesis is another possibility.  Neo-classical and electro acoustic elements are fine, but not required.  It could be beatless.  It could have minimal beats.

Thanks for the suggestions.  There are a few that I haven't heard of.

This album from Ghost and Tape is one of my newer favorites in the soft noise Ambient sub genre.

One of the Dronarivm compilations introduced me to this artist and several others.  The label doesn't focus exclusively on lo-fi Ambient and has some interesting electroacoustic and neo classical music.

I almost listed that Ghost and Tape release! It is great.

If you come across anything else that you're particularly fond of, please repost. I love exploring new sounds. There is a nice Porya Hatami release on Dronarivm too.

Eilean Records has some examples.  Mostly electroacoustic with lo-fi / soft noise.

Found today:

Twigs and Yarn - The Language of Flowers

Will buy this one from Amazon or iTunes for a more reasonable price.  Similar to Taylor Deupree and Marcus Fisher.  Definitely worth a full listen, if you like this sub genre.  Not quite as noisy as other examples.

All the music on that label is $15 at BC.  :o

The rest of their catalog is nothing like Twigs and Yarn.   It's a Japanese label.  Not sure if 1727 Yen is considered expensive for music in Japan.

It's a normal price at Amazon.

That does seem pricey. Nice sounds, though.

Taylor Duepree's new album will probably be a good example.

Only one track is up for listening at the moment.  But don't let that prevent you from purchasing the $100 package that includes a signed 13x13 print, a CD and a high resolution download because the limited quantity of 50 will probably be gone before the entire album can be heard.

And thanks Chris23 for suggesting Federico Durand.

He has several albums that are on my radar now.

This may be a bit too experimental for this sub genre, but it's good quality lo-fi tape music that is sort of Ambient.

Fossil Aerosol Mining Project

I don't think they use any instruments other than old films and crippled tape machines.  I haven't listened to them all, but Revisionist History and Very Early Fragments had some good moments.

Ujjaya :"De Retour"

I actually have that album.  I heard Mukta Triveni on Soma FM and had to have it.  It was featured on the Avant Garde Earwaves channel.  You should put some of your music on Bandcamp.

I bought the Twigs and Yarn album mentioned earlier in the thread.  Fantastic Lo-Fi recording!

It's high fidelity Lo-Fi.  I didn't even have to remaster it.  It's relatively loud for the style at -14db rms, but it isn't squashed.

This album from The Green Kingdom is on the wishlist.

https://thegreenkingdom.bandcamp.com/album/prismatic

It reminds me of the Ghost and Tape album mentioned earlier.  Dusty loops.  Various clicks and scrapes.  Minimal picked guitar without distortion or obvious effects.

I'm streaming Prismatic now and really enjoying it. Some of the recent Green Kingdom releases are too polished for my tastes; this is a refreshing listen.

He has a few albums that fit this lo-fi ambient thing.  Prismatic quickly struck me as his best example with brief, skip around auditions.

I also like some of his other works that don't really fit here.

One odd thing I noticed about Prismatic is it's being sold as a double album at Amazon, but a single album at Bandcamp.  The second half at Amazon is all remixes.
