Robert Rich & Faryus - Zerkalo AKA Mirror
« on: August 11, 2008, 06:47:29 AM »

"Tangential glimpses remotely echoed, untethered from touch. No time nor place, no past nor future, internal, external. Sculpting from energy, clouded motion vaguely slipping. Evanescent vibration, without meaning apart from its own open secret."

Limited edition of 1000 pieces, FAR-22, 2008

For those who are eager to wait, mp3 samples can be heard here.

From Robert Rich's site:

"...a collaboration with Faryus (Andrey Sodovnikov) of Faria records in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He sent me about two hours of interesting drones several months ago, and after I assembled them into a flow that felt like the framework for an album, I set aside the project to tackle other duties. I dedicated the remainder of June to finishing this album, and I’m getting close. Comparisons? Similar to “Stalker” or “Below Zero” in energy, perhaps more blurry, quite haunting and beautiful in parts, deeply layered but hovering near the shadows."

Sounds very much worth checking out!

Yes indeed...I was hoping it was going to be a double disk..but yeah...

I think I will wait and order directly from robert rich or any other EU label.
I do not trust the Russian postal service, it might take months for the cd to arrive.

Since it's most likely named after one of the best films ever made, it can't be too bad ;). The samples sounded really good, especially the 5th & 6th one...

Yeah, Robert Rich most like Andrei Tarkovsky :)
Well..he was the best filmaker ever...

For me the track 3 sounds best so far..

Have to say I'm quite disappointed in this release.  6 tracks--things start off strong with the first piece, and end strong with a nice theme/lap steel (last piece), but tracks 2-5 hover in abstract, formless territory for too long.  Could've used some more lap steel (which is only on the last track), or Rich's signature reverb-drenched flutes.  Also, this album sounds nothing like Stalker, mentioned on RR site.  Much closer to Below Zero if you ask me.  Overall, a good release but nothing special considering RR's overall body of work.

I have to agree, but it was kind of expected, this is a cold minimalistic drone release, also this is not an RR solo album.. But when listening to the album it is quite clear..at least in my mind that Faryus stands for the majority of music, most of the drones I think is done by him I think, but I still think something is missing. However I need to give this album some more time...It is maybe not one of his best releases but I still think the album fill a purpose.

Just bought this at my local record shop. They have quite an ambient section. I have tons of Robert Rich, this is sounding huge. Love the bells. Does Rich talk about Tarkovsky's film and what influences it had on the recording somewhere?

I've read a couple of ahem, not so great reviews of this disc online, I don't get it, I think it is a masterpiece and the best disc created in 2008.
