It is a bit confusing, yep. I believe the rule is that the player must be interfering with play to be counted offside. However, players are also not given offside until they've actually touched (or tried to touch) the ball, hence I guess why Iniesta wasn't offside in the first instance, although he may have been level with the defence anyway.

Actually, you have to have two men goal-side when the ball is played, not one - which is why Mexico had a goal given offside in the first game of the tournament when the goal keeper came off his line, even though there was still a defender between the attacker and the goal. Nothing's ever simple!

I wanted Holland to win last night before the game, but they were so dirty and cynical I'm glad Spain won. They're definitely the best team in the world and play the game the right way. And I'm happy Iniesta scored the winner, he's a great player.

Haha, England were bloody abysmal! I'm now an honourary Ghanaian (sp?!) so bring on Uruguay... :)

Yeah it's getting interesting now! England, France and Italy have been shown up, Brazil look strong but as usual, Spain now have great pressure on them to perform. Loving it :)

It certainly was! Things are hotting up nicely - Spain losing, Argentina coming into form, France as good as out.

No idea what to expect of England tonight, they _should_ win easily but Algeria will be hard to breakdown and England are always susceptible on the break. I'm nervous!!

I think the World Cup is a fantastic global event, I can't think of anything else which gets people all over the world watching, even if your own team isn't involved. Love it.

Brazil are definitely great to watch but Spain are looking even better at the moment, can't wait to see them in action tomorrow. They've got some incredible players. England are looking very average in comparison! :(

And I agree, I loved Zidane's headbutt, one of the great, dramatic, sporting moments.

Well I've watched nearly all the games so far, but I'm English as well - is there a pattern here??  ;D

England looked fairly average, as expected, and Germany looked excellent, which I didn't expect.

If the problem is the case rather than the monitor, why don't you get keyboard, mouse and monitor extension cables and move the CPU as far away as possible?  Then you can still sit in front of the monitor and keyboard and mouse, and yet you'll be far away from the source of the noise.

I'm thinking that it's almost certainly the cheap case/PSU/fans that I have, but just wanted to be sure and wondered if anyone had the same issue. I think moving the pc as far away as possible is the best solution.....

Unfortunately my computer is the entire studio at the moment - I sold all my external effects as I do everything through Guitar Rig and various plugins in Cubase now, so I can't really do much without the pc running.
However, I'm 99% sure that the noise is coming from the pc, as when I stand far away it's hardly noticeable (unless I'm going through huge reverbs etc) and as I move the guitar next to the pc the noise is defeaning.

I've never really noticed this before, I suppose it could be something in the room near the pc! I'll have a play around tonight.

I guess life would be boring if it was easy  :)

Cheers guys.. yeah it is an external recorder, and a high quality one.

I am using fairly cheap cables so could try getting a decent one - although I'm sure it's the pickups that are 'picking up' the noise. The noise is worst when I hold the guitar right in front or behind the PC, I'm wondering if it's because the cheap case I've got isn't shielding EMI very well....

I have to be quite near the PC when recording as I'm always playing about with plug-in settings etc...

Frustrated  :(

Yeah those clips are quite noisy - I was using a tone with plenty of overdrive to demonstrate the noise, and was moving my guitar towards the pc and away again to show that the sound is definitely being picked up from there.

Normally I do use much cleaner tones, but even then the noise is very noticeable when the guitar is put through heavy reverbs/delays etc...

I'm using a flat-screen monitor so it's not that. Like I say when I move the guitar next to the PC the noise level increases massively, so it's definitely something therein. Just don't know where to start to get rid of it though  :(

There's no noisegate here, or nothing that is noticeable - the pauses are being caused by whatever is generating the electrical noise.

I think the noise is always there when touching the strings, I'll check that out.

Actually I have used noise reduction plugins, but I find that they introduce a slight delay, and also the whole idea of getting the EMGs was to reduce all noise!!

Hi all,

This is just driving me mad, so thought I'd ask here and see if anyone's had the same issue....

Basically my guitars (both 6-string and bass) are picking up a lot of background noise from my PC. From my usual playing position (a few feet from the pc) the noise is audible but as I move closer it becomes clear that it's either the PSU the fans or something else generating some electrical interference. I've uploaded a couple of sample files of the noise, it's interesting that there's a brief pause every second or so - maybe this gives a clue as to the exact cause of the noise?

Obviously a simple solution is to move further away from the computer - but with the layout of my room this isn't that easy, and also I'd like to know and hopefully fix the issue completely. It's _really_ frustrating as for the type of music I'm doing (very clean chilled/ambient with a lot of delay/reverb) the noise gets totally out of hand very quickly. Also I installed active EMG's in my guitar hoping this would fix the issue but it actually just made it worse as the output is higher!!!

Try the 'lush universe' preset in R66 - that's the preset I always use and reminds me of my Quadraverb.

Not tried Ariesverb. I tried Aether after the amazing review in Computer Music but was a bit disappointed to be honest - didn't find it as rich as I was hoping, but maybe need to play with it more though.

Yeah good point - I'm actually using a reverb plugin that seems to be discontinued for some reason. It has an amazing sound - I've not heard any other software reverb come close...

The issue is that the reverb is part of the sound I'm searching for - if I reduce the tail length or 'wetness' of the reverb, it sounds totally different.
I am 80-90% of the way towards the sound I'm trying to get. If you check the second mp3 I posted, it sounds pretty good at lower volumes, but there's still a slightly annoying 'distortion' around 500-1000Hz which if I could just lower slightly I'd be happy. However, it seems to be quite a large band, and EQ'ing the whole thing just lowers the volume of the whole loop and doesn't really achieve anything.

I think I definitely need to try and catch the resonances earlier in the chain. My set-up is:

Guitar -> volume pedal -> audio interface -> Looper -> compressor -> guitar amp plugin -> mono reverb (8s) -> chorus->stereo reverb (8s)

or something like that, it varies a bit. The output of the mono reverb is the first part of the chain that is actually routed to the speakers...

I also have plonked compressors and EQ between the reverbs and at the end. Guess I just need to keep experimenting!

It's a bit quiet, but I like the sound of it. However, turn the volume up and it just starts to sound a bit heavy in the mids, just slightly unpleasant..

Okay, I've pretty much tried what's suggested - both at source and at the end of the chain. Trying to compress/EQ the output of the guitar before it goes anywhere, and then right at the end of the signal chain, by which time I suppose the damage has already been done.

I guess part of the issue is that i'm using two reverbs - one mono feeding the other stereo one, and both are around 8s tail. I've also tried EQ'ing the output of the first EQ but after a while you just start guessing and getting nowhere!

So I could try:
1) Work from the source - try getting the guitar sound as clear as possible and/or
2) EQ the reverb tails from one or both reverbs

Any other suggestions?
