It's funny how much I've enjoyed the resurgence of cassette culture. I completely recognize the limitations of the medium - heck, I can't even play tapes in my car anymore - but there's something oddly fun about getting a box of tapes in the mail after all these years of CDs and records (not to mention digital files). I've definitely picked up more tapes in the last year than any other medium. There are some great cassette-centered labels out there; two of my favorites are Tranquility Tapes ( and Constellation Tatsu (, both dealing in borderline-New Agey and bedroom-synth drone and ambient exploration. I'm particularly fond of Cask's self-titled album on Tranquility.

Thanks for the recommendation of Jaja's "Stars." That's satisfying a craving I didn't know I had.

Ooh, thanks for mentioning the Broken Harbour sale. I was deeply impressed by "Geometry of Shadows," and I've just downloaded the other two. I love this forum -- so many amazing recommendations come through.

Great thread!  I'd missed it before today.  I'm also absolutely hooked on Dragonquest IX.  The character customization is great, the humor is wonderfully subtle and clever, and the story unfolds nicely.  Great combat system; frustrating buying and selling, alas.  Just started Halo: Reach yesterday.  It felt great to be back in a Halo game.  Up next on my DS:  The World Ends with You, which I've owned for ages and never started.  Also need to get back to FFXIII, especially since Fallout 3: New Vegas is most definitely going to be sucking up a whole lot of time when it comes out!

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Re: Ghost Box

I couldn't agree more strongly with this recommendation.  I've thoroughly enjoyed everything I've heard from Ghost Box; the Advisory Circle is especially good, as is Belbury Poly's "From and Ancient Star" and Roj's "The Transactional Dharma of Roj."  The music evokes that great feeling of nostalgia for things I've never experienced that The Caretaker also evokes in me, though in a different way.  Really great music.

Thanks to some post in here, I've been introduced to Celer.  Listening to "The Everything and the Nothing" right now; just finished a first listen to "Close Proximity."  Just the sort of sounds I've been craving recently.
