Hypnos News and Announcements / Forum use
January 30, 2015, 01:00:30 PM
How come the two people who visit the Hypnos Forum the most never, or rarely, contribute or make comments?

Do people here only post when they are at work?

Enquiring Minds want to know....

A female coworker and I had been getting more personal and friendly recently after 6 years of simply cordial greeting and sporadic smalltalk.  Recently she asked me to help her lose weight because she noticed I had really slimmed down.  I was flattered and really wanted to share my knowledge and what worked for me.  I suggested meeting at Starbucks after work for privacy and curbing nosy coworkers.  I had copies of some great material to give her and planned to help her write out a program she could use to start losing weight.  She said sure, thanks for being willing to help me...but she said she was too busy that week and could we do it the next week.  I emailed asking if she worked the following Friday as it would be a good day for me.

I never got a reply and she acts like it never happened.  (She did receive and read the email.). No mention of it.  Really pissed me off because I had already invested time in this, gave her a protein drink and a few helpful tips. I think it's really rude not to respond at all and suddenly drop it.  My theory is she thought I had romantic ulterior motives, especially since her female coworker buddies are very catty and gossipy and maybe they gave her this idea.  Or she got cold feet attempting to diet. Who knows.  But it's made it weird for me because I feel she ignored me and was inconsiderate.  So I've been avoiding her and keeping conversations to a minimum.   How would you handle this?

Is it just me or is Amazon a crap source to buy music?  Got a gift card for Xmas and I decided what to order.  3 of them (CDs) weren't even listed and they were all available in my local record stores.  A box set import that could be had for $30 new on eBay was $45!  Add to that the disorganized, confusing descriptions and often totally wrong information.

So my Dad passed five years ago.  At age 72, this year, my mother began dating a guy and appears to be madly in love.  I am extremely uncomfortable and weirded out by this.  Namely, seeing her with somebody else.  I want to be happy for her, but my feelings are conflicted.  She is spending Xmas eve with him and his extended family, the first time in 46 years we won't be together.  Christmas day, our usual guests can't make it, so it will be me, mom and her boyfriend.  Now I'm getting really uncomfortable....

Anyone here experienced a similar situation where you were a middle age adult and this occurred?  I'm looking for advice/opinions on how you reacted and processed this turn of events.

Thanks for any feedback on this.

Everything and Nothing / Did you ever like KISS?
December 11, 2014, 11:28:56 AM
As a child-fan in the 70's, and now a balding middle aged adult, there has been a fascination with this group.  Were they "just entertainers" with no musical talent, or something more?  I have been revisiting the classic period (1973 to 1979) and feel these guys really rocked with the best of them and had quite a number of great rock songs.  I guess after slagging them off for years in my adult life, I'm surprised to find they were actually pretty damn good!  Any/all opinions on KISS wanted.

With all the price reductions, is the plan to not offer new releases from other labels?  Just curious as ordering direct from Europe can be really expensive.

Anyone seen this yet?  Opinions wanted....haven't seen it yet myself.

Yesterday someone posted in this thread a nasty message against Tomas Weiss about making money off dead people.   I hope they are kicked off this forum.  In the meantime, can you please reinstate the thread, because I keep up with the label this way.  Thanks.

The Sylvian CD is just out, apparently ambient instrumental, with poetry reading I think, but maybe not but just text accompanying the music.  Haven't heard it though but with his extreme experiments in sound these days I'm not getting my hopes up.

Steve Roach/Jorge Reyes--Ancestor Circle.  Did this get delayed??  Not on Steve's or Projekt sites.  Highly anticipated for sure.

Thom Brennan.  Seems to have disappeared from the earth (along with Tetsu Inoue). No new album for five or so years.

Andrey Faryus (Faria Records).  I assume the label folded, but never heard anything for years.

Patrick O Hearn.  Seems ages ago there was new music.

Steve Roach.  No new album in about three months.  I'm starting to worry.   ;)

I really liked their piece on the recent Projekt compilation, so just went to Tim Story website to see if the album was available yet.  Yes, limited edition 750 copies, signed numbered.  Clicked the add to cart button and was shocked to see this CD costs $35!!!  I'm sorry, I'd pay at most $25 for something like this (even that is a little much).

What justifies asking $35 for one 50 minute CD?  Lazy Arc is the name of the album.  If you wanna blow your whole paycheck on it, be my guest!   ;D

I just received Terrace of Memories (Vidna Obmana/Rosenthal) today, bought on eBay, which was "New and sealed.". The disc is a CDR! (albeit a pro type disc with on-disc printing).  Anyone know if the label ever released cdr before?  Is this a bootleg??  I've emailed Sam R., waiting for a reply...

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Any Enigma fans?
October 08, 2014, 02:19:17 PM
I read recently that after the first album, each subsequent one sold only half as well as its immediate predecessor.

That being said, I could care less what the sales are or about the Amazon customers who love to slagg off Michael Cretu as a has been who lost his creativity.  To me his releases have been consistently excellent.

I read a new album  is released late 2014/early 2015.

So, any fans here??

Hypnos Label Releases / Outfolding CD Cover Art
October 08, 2014, 01:26:34 PM
So am I really twisted in seeing a giant VAGINA in this artwork???  Especially since its called OutFOLDING.

I'm sick, I know, I need help......

I love this dub techno label, but every time I look at their Bandcamp page, all the CD releases are sold out.  And this is stuff only out for a couple weeks.  Luckily the Amoeba record store here gets copies so I don't always miss out, but some of this stuff just can't be found anywhere after its sold out.  Anyone else into this label with similar frustration?

I have to admit I've been suckered into the whole remaster craze where when a band or artist remasters their whole catalog, I immediately buy them and replace my originals.  I've since learned to be more cautious these days as some of these remastering jobs are really horrible and do more harm than good.  I have found myself going back to music stores and buying back all my originals because the remasters were so bad.  Below is a list of remaster series I have found extremely disappointing, with my reasons why:

RUSH ("The Rush Remasters")--these were issued in 1997 and whoever did them effectively took out the warm bass harmonics of the music.  It is sad that all these Rush fans buying the box sets think they have the definitive editions of these albums when in reality they have total garbage repackaged.  Apparently I'm not alone in this opinion based on the Rush forums I've perused.

COCTEAU TWINS (remastered by Robin Guthrie).  Very disappointing that Guthrie ruined his own music.  He cranked up the volume and sucked the warmth right out of the music.  Luckily the original 4AD UK cd's are easy to find because most fans sold their originals for the "upgrades."

DEAD CAN DANCE (remastered by various).  Same as above, basically.  To me these were too loud and the bass harmonics were compromised.  Not nearly as bad as the Cocteau Twins hatchet job.  I only have the original 4AD UK discs now in my collection.

OTHER 4AD LABEL BANDS LIKE CLAN OF XYMOX, THIS MORTAL COIL, ETC. --John Dent of Loud Mastering did a real hatchet job on the first Clan of Xymox CD and the followup Medusa.  One of the worst remastering jobs I ever heard.  This Mortal Coil I think didn't need an upgrade and I think the originals are still perfect.  I can't tell much difference with the recent remasters.

DAVID SYLVIAN.  Again I found these too loud and the subtle bass harmonics missing.  Secrets of the Beehive was especially bad, way too loud for such an intimate vocal album.  The only ones that benefited from remasters were Brilliant Trees (which always sounded muffled) and Alchemy.

Here are some series I thought were good:

BRIAN ENO. Really subtle and tasteful job on these.  An improvement over perfection, if that's possible.

THE CHURCH.  If you go back and play this band's original CD's from the 80's, boy did their music not transfer well to CD.  They sounded like total crap compared to the awesome remasters, which took away the tinny sound and muted volume.

SLOWDIVE.  Although one of my favorite bands, I always thought their studio recordings were pretty lackluster compared to their live performances, and the CD's sounded, fidelity-wise, slightly better than awful.  Great remasters I thought on these.  So much more listenable.

They call it "loudness wars" these days.  I don't think the issue is just cranking up the volume, but robbing the original recordings of what made them special.  Also, I think it's interesting that Amazon advertises certain albums as "original recording remastered" when they WEREN'T remastered, just reissued.  Best example I can think of is the Klaus Schulze reissues.  On the KS website it states these were not remastered.

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Bad Ambient
September 03, 2014, 10:32:18 AM
Sometimes on paper ambient music can look good.  Until you actually hear it and it sounds like cat farts.

How about the term "bad ambient" (proposed pronunciation: buh-DAM-beeyunt)?

Do you have any warnings about stuff that is just plain awful?

The one that inspired this topic is "Variations for Organ, Keyboard, and Processors" by Vidna Obmana + Willem Tanke.  I really do want to like this.  Great cover art.  But music sounds like a 5 year old playing the organ.  I will have to give another spin just to be sure.

Been waiting 20 years for this and sadly found out over a month too late.  Their show in San Francisco on November 7  has already sold out.  Geez, I hope some greedy scalpers will take my big bucks, if I can find one by then.  There's some video footage on YouTube of the reunited group and while they don't sound quite as visceral as I remember when  they were all around 24 (back in '94 opening for Catherine Wheel), they sound pretty good.  Hope they make some new music.

I can't remember seeing any discussions or comments after the last couple Hypnos CDs were released.  This would be Antonio Testa and Subradial.  Just wondering why ?.......

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Any Genesis fans?

Any opinions on Gabriel vs Post Gabriel, favorite releases, etc?  I just got Seconds Out, excellent live album where Steve Hackett was still in the band.  How about those 2008 reissues which many fans condemned for remixing the music, however slightly?

I bought this '94 Staalplaat CD recently.  The track times are totally different than what's shown on the back cover, plus there are 12 tracks but the label indicates 10.  Really don't understand how a label could f*** up this bad and put the product on the market.  Anyone have this CD?

Everything and Nothing / Was this an insult?
July 17, 2014, 04:15:34 PM
I'm a 46 year old guy.  A female coworker asked what I did on some time off I took and I said "House sitting and dog sitting for my mom while she was on vacation.". Then she says, "Oh, don't you live with your mom?". I never said anything ever about living with my mother so I don't know where she would get this idea.  Plus, why would I call it house sitting if I lived there?  As living with your mom at my age is universally thought of as uncool, odd, etc,  if somebody thinks you do then they must think you're unable to live away from mommy and are socially freakish or something.  I take it as an insult.  Would you?

And I don't mean dating them, don't even ask them out.  Period!  Unless you like things being awkward as f*** in the office and ruining a perfectly good friendship.

Hey all,

I am looking for opinions on a dating situation.

A woman I'm interested in has shown signs of mutual interest.  She's a single mom who in unattached.  Last week while chatting she told me when she's not hanging with her daughter she volunteers at two separate organizations.  She commented that she wants to cut back on her volunteer hours "to have more time to herself.". She offered this information without me asking about her free time or what she does on weekends.

Does this sound like a subtle invitation for me to ask her out or get her number?

As with many guys, I often have trouble reading signs that a woman wants me to make a move.

Any ideas/comments greatly appreciated.  Thanks!!

Everything and Nothing / Insomnia treatments
March 26, 2014, 05:12:31 PM
I've had insomnia really bad the last month.  Fall asleep fine but wake up middle of the night.  In the morning I don't feel rested and have bags and dark circles under my eyes.  I tried Trazodone and I slept better but felt tired, foggy and depressed the next day.  Anyone suffer from this condition and can recommend things that work?  Any info greatly appreciated!

All of a sudden I'm having problems playing Band camp tracks on my phone.  Buttons don't work, music starts then stops, etc.  Any ideas what this could be?  My HTC One device does not have flashplayer, could this be a possible culprit?
