Brian Grainger & Shinobu Nemoto – Brian Grainger & Shinobu Nemoto – Milieu Music – CDR
(The first three songs on this album are tight well produced hazy drones.  Just what you would expect from this combo, but once you hit track four “Smoke” we have a rather amazing use of drones, Basinski piano loop, and a strange cough that compliments the entirety of the piece….rather creative I must say.  Track five goes into VCV Second Sun vibes with thick slabs of guitar granite drones.  And then you have track six “Hanging Garden” which has a smooth interplay of environmental sounds, sweeping guitar drones, and a nice fat little bassline holding everything together.  Wow I could really keep mouthing off about this release but it comes with my highest recommendations and perhaps the underdog of 2008)

Machinefabriek – Rusland – Machinefabriek Music – 3” CDR
(A slow ebbing flow of environmental sounds and caressing dronescapes preside over this mini-CDR.  If you liked his release on Sentient Cognition Archive which was an anthology of live concerts, this piece should be to your liking.  The only difference is that Rusland focuses more on the environmental sounds (recorded in Russia) but this piece is better single handedly than any one piece on the Sentient Cognition Archive release.  And one more thing when you purchase this release you also get a free download of additional material that didn’t make it on this release which is also quite good)

Coppice Halifax – Ocean Lion – Milieu Music – CDR
(It’s soft music that reminds me a bit of GAS only in the repetition and elongated track lengths.  I like this release more than the 3” CDR due to the soft melodies, humming basslines, and mid-nineties feel.  I also noticed that the album as opposed to the 3” takes on a more 4/4 ambient techno feel.  The split between both makes more sense now that I had the chance to listen to both releases.  Another difference that I noticed on both releases is that the full album incorporates ocean surf sounds hence the title “Ocean Lion” but I don’t remember hearing any ocean sounds on the 3”)

Sublamp – Cathedrals of Gravity

Nice one Alan thanks for the head's up on this one....did you get a chance to listen to his prior release on IOD.  It's actually forgettable....I downloaded it played it once and have never felt the urge to replay it again.  This one on the other hand gives me another impression altogether.  Oh and thanks for the Pan American sample....can't wait!

Y'welcome, Fern. You've thrown some smart tips this way too. Hadn't heard any previous Sublamp, but seems I can remain happily oblivious after your unrecommend. The new Pan American has leaked, if you care to trawl the blogosphere - I know some prefer to remain untainted. But in the meantime... topic-shifting slightly, Eluder has become surprisingly unelusive - positively grabbable in fact:

Those who succumbed to The Most Beautiful Blue at the tail end of last year might be interested in a couple of free things available via net labels.

Warm Warning: given a makeover by Distance, who put out some good stuff last year by Implex Grace: http://distancerecordings.com/dist009.php

a newer EP, Drift: released by Archaic Horizon:

That is a great album! I just ordered the I'm Your Man DVD the other day. I've heard good things about it.

I've been waiting for the day when someone on the Forum mentions playing a
particular album, and 50 or more other people post saying "odd, I was just
playing that too."

Then we all wake up in tubs of viscous fluid, fed by tubes, surrounded by a
turbulent overcast sky and dark buzzing alien machines ....

Satyricon - The Age of Nero (this disc kicks major ass and the show last month w/Frost on drums was KILLER!) I can't wait to see them if they make it back in October as they mentioned! Get this if you like underground metal.
